Ubisoft announced a new Rainbow Six during the last Gamescom Opening Night Live. But the surprise wasn’t the announcement, it was its genre. Leaving the tactical shooter behind, it embraced a new genre. It’s a turn-based strategy game in the style of XCOM, similar to the upcoming Star Wars Zero Company.
Called Rainbow Six Tactics, it’s being developed by Ubisoft Paris and we’ll play as Six, the commander of the Rainbow unit, who will have to lead up to four elite operatives on high-risk missions; with optional permadeath. With an initial preparation phase at headquarters and tactical execution in the field, it will follow the classic structure of turn-based strategy games of its kind.
The importance of tearing down walls
With fifteen unique characters, each with their own abilities, special devices, and skill trees, the campaign will feature dozens of missions set all around the world. And as is a hallmark of the franchise, one of the game’s most important mechanics will be the ability to tear down walls so you can open up new points of entry for tackling missions.
It still doesn’t have a release date beyond a vague 2027 window, Rainbow Six Tactics is confirmed for PC. Though it’s still possible it will also be announced for consoles in future updates.
