If there’s anyone more controversial than Mel Gibson in Hollywood nowadays, it’s Jim Caviezel, the actor who starred alongside him in The Passion of the Christ. Caviezel has starred in Sound of Freedom this year, one of the most controversial films of 2023 due to its ties to the American far right. However, this controversy has only increased the actor’s popularity, which seemed to have faded away.
So much so that someone in Hollywood has decided to greenlight a new collaboration between Caviezel and Gibson: the sequel to The Passion of the Christ. Titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Part 1, the director of Hacksaw Ridge will shoot a new film that will follow the story of Jesus from the dead… or maybe on a spree.

Jesus Christ descends into hell
As Jim Caviezel asserts, it’s “the greatest film in history. It could be two films. It could be three.” For now, we’ll have a first part of this resurrection that spans just three days, but we’ll see what the filmmaker comes up with to fill them with action.
The movie will cover how Jesus Christ descended into hell once after death, where, as dictated by the Bible, he spent three days before returning to life. We’ll also witness how he ascended to the Bosom of Abraham, where he resurrected several Old Testament saints, and the lives of the apostles during these dreadful days.

While there have been many films about the New Testament, there’s actually very little in audiovisual form about this particular moment, so it will be interesting to see. The film will be shot between Rome and Mexico starting in the spring of 2024, and the idea is to release it by the end of 2025. The Passion of the Christ was an unparalleled phenomenon in its time, but will Resurrection manage to garner the same attention?
