A24 has just released one of the most controversial films in their entire studio: Love Lies Bleeding. Starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian, the film explores crime from a queer perspective, with the relationship between the two protagonists as the main attraction. The film itself doesn’t seem controversial, but due to its characteristics, it has generated rejection in certain sectors.
After premiering at Sundance and Berlin, Love Lies Bleeding has been released at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF), but its reception by the audience ended in a disturbance that required police intervention.
Homophobic insults paralyzed the movie screening
According to Variety, the film screening was divided into two groups: a majority of male and geek audience, typical of the festival, and a younger and queer group of fans of the film. The screening started off normally, but soon turned into a nightmare when the romantic scenes between the two lesbian protagonists generated homophobic comments and insults from the first group of the audience.
This, of course, enraged the audience that supported the movie, and it all culminated in a dispute where the organizers ended up calling the police to intervene. Unfortunately, nothing new under the sun.
