It seems that OpenAI has set out to dethrone Google, at least when it comes to search. The company behind ChatGPT has announced the launch of its new search engine, which will take place on Monday, May 13th.
However, according to Reuters, the date may not be final and subject to change. In the event that we finally see the release of the OpenAI engine on May 13, it would happen just one day before (May 14) Google’s annual I/O developer conference. In its last edition, in 2023, the company also focused on the innovations that Gemini, its AI, would bring to its search engine.
According to the information provided by Neowin, OpenAI’s search engine would use its famous chatbot, ChatGPT, as a base. It would work in a fairly simple way: when a query is made, it would search for the answer on the web and then provide it along with quotes from sources like Wikipedia. The results could also be accompanied by images to complement the answers.
Its main competitors would be, of course, the powerful Google and Bing, Microsoft’s proprietary search engine. Although the latter continues to be one of OpenAI’s main partners since 2019, it seems that the company is still closing agreements in parallel with companies like Apple.
OpenAI and Apple: Will there be collaboration?
Everything seems to indicate that OpenAI and Apple have held conversations about incorporating artificial intelligence into the next version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 18. Apple’s goal would be to integrate AI functionalities into its devices, but without neglecting its strong emphasis on user privacy protection.
However, there are still no guarantees that we will see this collaboration materialize. The answer will be obtained at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held next June.
