If we take a look back at everything Lena Dunham has done after Girls, we find a pretty uncomfortable truth: nothing done by the woman who proclaimed herself “the voice of her Generation” has had the slightest traction. Do Tiny Furniture, Camping, Generation and Too Much ring a bell? Well, that’s Dunham’s track record over the last decade: no wonder she wants to go back to Girls so desperately.
Not Girls Anymore, but Women
Ten years after the end of Girls, Dunham has decided it’s a good idea to give in to HBO’s siren song and make five more episodes to see what the characters are up to. Well, not all of them: Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna will be back, but we can rule out Adam showing up. That is, Adam Driver, the hugely famous actor who got his start on the series.
After all, in her autobiography, Dunham really laid into him and called him toxic, while also revealing the most private parts of their relationship (professional, more or less). Although in 5 episodes there’ll be room for more supporting characters like Elijah, played by good old Andrew Rannells, don’t expect Kylo Ren himself to appear in the series.
This new season will start shooting in summer 2027 and we still don’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected at the start of 2028. A golden opportunity to say goodbye to the Girls for the second time. Although, as Dunham herself says, “Can we still call it Girls? Because we’re old as fuck”. The voice of a generation.
