The MacBook Pro is about to undergo one of its biggest changes in years. According to rumors, Apple will unveil this very Wednesday, October 28, its first laptop with a touch screen, an OLED display and a refreshed, lighter design. According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the presentation will take place during the Pro and Tell event in Los Angeles, where several media outlets will be able to try the new devices as soon as they’re announced. Now that rumors have been piling up for months, here’s what we expect from these new machines.
OLED display, Dynamic Island, and a lighter design
The new MacBook Pro models are expected to come in the same two 14-inch and 16-inch sizes we already know, but with considerably less weight. Besides the new lighter design, they would feature Dynamic Island in place of the current notch. The OLED display would greatly improve contrast and would support direct touch interaction.
The key to this touch interaction would also be macOS Golden Gate. Based on clues in its beta versions, it seems the system would automatically adapt buttons and menus depending on whether we use the trackpad or the screen. Even the Dock and the menu bar would support touch gestures.
New chips and more expected on Wednesday
The new models would feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max that Apple launched in March. The price, meanwhile, could rise by as much as $500 compared with equivalent models.
Alongside the MacBook Pro, Apple would also update the iMac and the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip, recently debuted in the Mac mini. All in all, we’re entering an especially important week for the Mac, we’ll see what surprises are in store.
