Tom Hardy’s movie that no one remembers and for which he gained 13 kg of muscle
Tom Hardy, renowned for his intense roles in films like “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Dunkirk” has once again transformed his physique for a character that delves deep into the complexities of familial relationships and martial arts.
In the 2011 film “Warrior” directed by Gavin O’Connor, Hardy portrays Tommy Riordan, a Marine who returns to Pennsylvania to confront both his estranged father and his brother in a high-stakes mixed martial arts tournament.
To bring the character to life, Hardy underwent rigorous training for three months, emphasizing a remarkable physical transformation.
Tom Hardy’s Intense Transformation for Warrior Revealed
He packed on 13 kg of muscle while committing to an eight-hour daily regimen that featured two hours each of boxing, kickboxing, and weight training, rounding it out with martial arts choreography.
Hardy’s dedication illustrates just how seriously he approached this role, as he experimented with techniques he had never practiced before.
Beyond the physical demands, “Warrior” presents a nuanced narrative, centering on the fraught relationship between Tommy and his father Paddy, played by Nick Nolte. Once a promising boxer hampered by addiction, Paddy’s efforts at recovery are met with the suspicion and pain of a son who has yet to forgive.
The emotional stakes rise when Tommy asks Paddy to train him to win the tournament, a situation complicated by the involvement of his brother Brendan, who is similarly motivated to win for financial survival.
Following “Warrior,” Hardy developed a profound passion for martial arts, even competing in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and acting as an ambassador for a veterans’ training organization.
However, Hardy candidly acknowledged the toll such physical alterations can take on his body, particularly as he approaches 40, indicating that extreme training has resulted in persistent muscle pain and clicking joints.
