As of June 10th, Nintendo has officially stopped supporting the integration of the Switch console with X (formerly Twitter), becoming the last of the current-generation consoles to do so after Microsoft and Sony disabled their own access last year.
The integration was removed as part of the Nintendo Switch 18.1.0 update, eliminating the ability for users to link their Twitter account with the console or post in-game screenshots from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate directly to the social media platform.
The removal of these features constitutes the bulk of the 18.1.0 update, which also includes some general stability improvements and removes the ability to link social media accounts through the Switch’s Friends Suggestions feature.
Twitter users are leaving and the reason may be the new exorbitant API price
Nintendo announced these changes last month but did not explicitly state the reason for withdrawing support for Twitter . Since Switch users can still share their content on Facebook, it is likely related to the changes in X’s API pricing, which now starts at $42,000 per month for enterprise customers.
Microsoft did not mention X’s API update when it removed the ability for Xbox consoles to share game uploads to the service last April, nor did Sony when it followed suit in November for the PS5 and PS4.
The cost may not be the only factor, as Slack also said it had withdrawn support because API updates affected the functionality of its own integration with X. Regardless of the reason, console gamers will now find it difficult to connect directly to the platform.
This is despite the fact that X Gaming’s account, in a now-deleted post, claimed that their “partnership with Nintendo remains strong” after Nintendo announced its plans to remove support for the Switch.
