Valve's new console, the Steam Machine, is 6 times more powerful than a Steam Deck

Valve surprised everyone yesterday with three new products set to hit the market in 2026. Gabe Newell’s video game company is giving the Steam Machine another shot, and this time they don’t want to make mistakes.

The new hardware line from Steam brings a new Steam Controller, which features two large trackpads and improved gyroscopic functionality. It also includes the Steam Frame, which is a new virtual reality headset with enhanced features that succeeds the Valve Index.

The Steam Machine: what is it?

Valve is officially making another Steam Machine, which will allow players to enjoy their Steam games on the television and with more powerful hardware. The next-generation Steam Machine will run SteamOS very similarly to the Steam Deck, but it is said to be six times more powerful than the portable gaming console.

The Steam Machine is a modest six-inch cube with power similar to the PS5 (which arrives 6 years late), and Valve aims for the machine to run most games from the Steam library at a resolution of 4K and a smoothness of 60 fps with FSR (which remains to be seen).

This hybrid between PC and console features a graphics hardware (AMD RDNA3), which offers approximately the same level of power as an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 card. This leaves it slightly behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in terms of raw gaming power.

For a frame of reference, this will have a bit less GPU grunt than PS5 but significantly better CPU, even when the CPU is capped at 30watt

The CPU is a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C processor, and the machine comes with 16 GB of DDR5 + 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It is also available in SSD models of 512 GB and 2 TB, with a micro SD card slot included for additional storage. As for the software, the Steam Machine also includes enhancements for Proton, which allows users to run Windows games on SteamOS.

Interestingly, the Steam Machine also includes quite a few design details to add style or customization. For example, the machine includes a light bar on the front that shows download progress and specific information. The light bar can be customized, just like the front panel, which is interchangeable. A 140 mm fan will keep the machine cool in the style of the Xbox Series X.

Unfortunately, the price of the Steam Machine has not yet been confirmed, which is the most interesting point to determine whether we are looking at a good deal or not. We have to wait.
