Volkswagen’s upcoming ID.2 electric vehicle has been spotted undergoing testing near the Nürburgring, showcasing a production model that closely resembles the original concept unveiled in 2023.
This new entry-level EV exemplifies Volkswagen’s commitment to the electric market, with plans to launch the ID.Polo variant priced at under 25,000 euros in Europe, which could translate to around £20,000 in the UK.
The ID.2 will feature two battery options: a 38 kWh pack for those looking for an economical choice, and a more robust 56 kWh option for greater range. Both configurations promise an impressive maximum range of 280 miles (450 km), positioning the ID.2 as a competitive option in the rapidly expanding EV market.
ID.2’s Affordable Price Tag Makes It A Game Changer In The EV Market
Drivers can expect significant speed in recharging capabilities, with the ability to go from 10% to 80% battery in just 20 minutes, thanks to a peak charging capacity of 125 kW.
Design-wise, the ID.2 draws inspiration from classic Volkswagen models such as the Golf, Polo, and Beetle, while still maintaining distinctive modern elements.
This blend of old and new is reflected in features like the 12.9-inch infotainment screen and a 10.9-inch driver display, complemented by physical buttons for a user-friendly experience. New drive modes will transform the driver cluster to evoke a nostalgic feel reminiscent of vintage models.
Following the ID.2, Volkswagen has ambitious plans; the lineup will soon expand to include an SUV variant and the ID.1, a smaller, more affordable model expected in 2027. Additionally, SEAT S.A. has begun producing body parts and battery systems for the ID.2 at its Martorell plant in Spain, signaling a significant step forward in Volkswagen’s Electric Urban Car Family initiative.
