Although it seemed unbelievable, the impossible became a reality. After a long wait, it was the iPhone 15 that marked the beginning of the end for the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C. We have to thank the European Union for making the integration of USB-C mandatory in all mobile phones and tablets sold in the continent by 2024.
However, this does not mean that Apple has completely killed off its beloved connector. Although the company already includes USB-C in its main devices, we can still find some products that are still being sold with a Lightning port. Specifically, we are referring to the following:
- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE: Lightning hasn’t completely disappeared from iPhones yet, but the truth is that its time is running out. The iPhone 14 will be discontinued next year and rumors are already pointing to a soon-to-be-released iPhone SE with USB-C.
- Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad: Mac accessories have not seen a refresh in a long time, and that is reflected in their Lightning port. Here Apple has a great opportunity to surprise us with new and updated keyboards and mice, but it seems that they are not very interested at the moment.
- Apple Pencil: the first generation Apple Pencil holds a special place in our hearts. This accessory turned the iPad into an essential work tool for both artists and students. Despite having new versions, this Apple Pencil is still the only one compatible with older iPads, such as the 9th generation iPad, iPad Mini 5, or the 2016 iPad Pro.
