There is no doubt: games are becoming longer, and we don’t always have time to fully enjoy them. In fact, sometimes, when we are looking for Kolog number 853 or a collectible that we don’t even care about, we end up playing as if we were in an office filling spreadsheets: it’s what needs to be done, let’s get to it. However, a game of Smash always takes away all the sorrows. Or does it?

Masahiro Sakurai, director of the Super Smash Bros franchise, has apologized (“I’m so sorry!”) to the players who have spent hundreds (and thousands) of hours fighting in Nintendo’s flagship game because, literally, “they could have spent their precious time doing literally anything else.” Harsh, but necessary.
“In this modern world, you are constantly competing with everyone, it’s a struggle for people’s time,” he clarified. “Even if someone has a lot of free time, it means something different now than in the past. There are always things to do. The question is: How do people choose to spend their time?”
He is not wrong: How many Netflix series do we have pending? How many movies in theaters? How many video games without finishing? And how many comics that we always say “I’ll find some time”? In fact, Sakurai believes that the biggest threat to people’s free time is not video games, but mobile phones: you don’t need to give them much time or concentration, and in the end they turn out to be perfect for those days when you’re exhausted.
In any case, if you are a great Super Smash Bros player, you know what it’s about: Sakurai feels very sorry for what he has done to you.
