WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging application, has announced a new feature to enhance the security and privacy of calls. This new feature, called “Protecting IP Address in Calls,” allows users to hide their IP address during calls made through the app.
The IP address is a unique identifier assigned to each device connected to the Internet. This information can be used to track a user’s location, posing a potential threat to their privacy.
With the new feature “Protect IP Address in Calls,” WhatsApp allows us to redirect call traffic through WhatsApp servers, thus hiding the user’s real IP address. The feature is now available in all versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS. To activate it, users need to follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Go to “Settings.”
- Tap on “Privacy.”
- Tap on “Advanced.”
- Enable the option “Protect IP Address in Calls.”
Once the feature is activated, WhatsApp will display a warning message to the user, informing them that calls from the device will be routed through WhatsApp servers, which may “reduce the call quality.”
The “Protect IP Address in Calls” feature is an important measure to enhance the security of WhatsApp calls. By hiding users’ IP addresses, WhatsApp helps protect their privacy and makes it difficult for people to track their calls.
This new feature adds to the other security and privacy measures that WhatsApp has implemented over the years, including end-to-end encryption, which prevents third parties from intercepting conversations between two individuals; chat encryption, allowing private conversations that cannot be read by others; and the introduction of passkeys, enabling secure login to WhatsApp without the need for a password.
