The question is simple: When we can watch Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney+?
With Avatar 2, the tactic that Disney has followed with its releases has been very clear from almost the beginning. Its movies go to the subscription service after a few months of being released in theaters. Although the deadlines that are usually handled vary, the rule is usually to start from 45 days, a rule followed by producers such as Warner with HBO, for example.
We have already seen this with the latest Marvel releases, such as Thor: Love and Thunder or Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, with waiting times that are very similar. However, this is not always the case. Different were the cases of Black Widow or Mulan, for example, which had a simultaneous release in theaters and on Disney Plus.
In the case of movies produced by other companies, the story differs again. This is the case of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is likely to be seen on Disney+ between 2023 and 2024 at the latest. With Avatar: The Way of Water, it is likely that we will have to wait a little longer than normal to see it.
In recent months, Disney has tried another strategy with the film starring the Na’vi. To generate more excitement with Avatar 2, Disney removed the first Avatar from its streaming platform and rereleased it in theaters on September 30th. The movie of James Cameron was a milestone in the year of its release and today, it continues to be the highest grossing film of all time (it grossed $2.847 billion). Not even Avengers: Endgame could surpass this figure, although it certainly came very close (2.798 billion dollars).
For now, Avatar: The Way of Water has already exceeded $1 billion in box office revenue. Certainly this is a quite spectacular figure, although it is somewhat far from Top Gun Maverick (1.355 billion dollars) and from the aforementioned Spider-Man: No Way Home (1.901 billion dollars). The financial results of Avatar will be key for its release on Disney Plus. Will we have to wait 45 days? Will they become 90 or more?
