YouTube Introduces Premium Features for Paid Subscribers: Explore the Benefits
YouTube wants you to pay to use its video app. And the way to do it is by offering what we all knew: quality.
It seems that advertisements are not enough, which is why YouTube has started charging for something that has always been free until now: video quality.
One of the latest additions for YouTube Premium subscribers is a new 1080p level with improved bitrate (resulting in better colors, less noise, and improved blacks), and now Google is testing this feature with select Android and Google TV users.
In February, it was observed that YouTube was testing a new “1080p Premium” level exclusively for YouTube Premium subscribers, initially limited to iPhone and Apple TV users.
In April, Google officially announced the feature, explaining that it offered 1080p content at a higher bitrate, initially exclusive to Apple devices but would be coming to Android devices later on.
The time has come: YouTube Premium to watch your videos well
Through the Android TV OS app for YouTube, it has been discovered that a Reddit user can already access the 1080p Premium level.
The app, which would work on both Google TV and Android TV devices, displays “1080p Premium” alongside the standard 1080p option, with a brief explanation that it offers “improved bitrate.” When switching to this level, users are prompted to upgrade to YouTube Premium if they haven’t already done so.
Beyond that, at least one user on Twitter reported seeing the “1080p Premium” option on their Motorola smartphone through the official Android app.
Many still believe that this new 1080p level implies that YouTube is putting quality behind a paywall, but that is not true.
Instead of making the existing quality a paid feature, this is a completely new quality level on YouTube that is exclusive to Premium members. The existing Full HD quality level has not changed and remains free for everyone.
