Evil Lyrics delivers songs to your desktop

evil lyricsOne way of enriching your musical experience is to learn the lyrics to all those songs you know and love. Thanks to Evil Lyrics, music lovers have an easy way to do just that every time they listen to MP3’s on their PC. Evil Lyrics is a small plug-in that displays the lyrics of songs as they play as long as you’ve got an internet connection.

Once installed, Evil Lyrics starts every time you open your default media player. The window floats in a small browser style window at the side of the player but it can be minimised to the tray if you don’t want it sat there. The window also provides additional links to Google searches, Amazon album profiles, translations, offline storage and other album or song related data. The plug-in was designed originally for Winamp (which is what we tested it in) but it now works with Windows Media Player, Foobar2000 and Sonique. It’s also supposed to be compatible with Media Player XP although many users have reported problems with this particular player.

Train your brain with Lumosity

lumosity.jpgFlash games are fun but sometimes they also distract too much and make it hard to go back to work. So, if you’re going to play anyway, at least play a game where you can do something more than killing aliens or collecting golden coins.

Lumosity is a mixture between a game and a brain fitness program that promises to improve your memory, attention, cognitive control and processing speed along a free 30-session course. Each session consists of 3 to 5 short games in which you’ll have to catch birds by spelling their names, find your way through a labyrinth full of monsters or solve maths operations as fast as you can.

Before starting your sessions you can take a quick test to measure your LumosIQ for a better progress tracking. Our result wasn’t too bad but we’re definitely enrolling in the course! And you’d better hurry up too, as it seems Lumosity is not going to be always free.

IPv6, BootCamp etc – Vista news round up

Windows Vista logoThere are reports this week that IPv6, the ‘Next Generation Internet’ is suffering from some poor support in Windows Vista. Carolyn Duffy Marsan at Network World gets some great detail on the story. Apparently, it’s all about IPv4 and IPv6 not playing well together: the recommendation is that IPv6 be removed from workstations for the time being.

Microsoft has released an updated version of the Windows Mobile Device Centre, fixing a problem which prevented the latest WM6 devices from properly syncing with Vista. No more having to type in your PIN every time you try to sync!

LogonStudio has long been a popular way to customise the way your Windows login screen looks. They’ve got a new version out for Vista and the guys at WinCustomize.com have put together a nice guide to the new app.

Finally, some good news for Mac OS X Tiger users. Apple have revealed the latest version of their Boot Camp, the utility which allows users with the latest Macs to boot into Windows. Beta 1.3 includes some bugfixes, better support for Vista, improved graphics drivers, improved support for international keyboards and… that’s about it. Also updated is the popular alternative, Parallels, which lets users run alternative operating systems from their Mac OS desktop without restarting. The new version includes better CPU and RAM handling, but most importantly the new SmartSelect technology that allows seamless integration of Windows applications into the Mac OS environment.

5 tips for Paris Hilton

paris hiltonSince everyone says top blonde socialite Paris Hilton is the ultimate IT girl, we at InsideTonic thought we’d lend her a few software tips whilst she serves her drink-driving jail sentence behind bars. Our thoughts go out to Paris at this time – it must be very hard living without an internet connection.

1. eMule – Perhaps Paris should familiarize herself with this P2P network – it has, after all, been instrumental in her achieving much of her fame.

2. Paris Hilton Wallpaper – Just to remind her how her number one fan looks.

3. Paris Chase – No danger of being arrested by police here as you race against the clock – this is definitely a non-pornographic way to spend one night in Paris.

4. Power Video Karaoke – Paris’s singing career never really took off with ‘Stars Are Blind‘ (some said the title should be changed to ‘Paris Is Deaf’) but with this program, she can work on her next release – from prison.

5. Billionaire II – Build a fortune in Billionaire City – maybe the only place big enough for Paris’s wallet although maybe she should leave the business acumen to Daddy.

UPDATE: Yes, we’ve just heard that Paris is out and about, downloading software with impunity. We can only imagine that she heard about the list we made for her and felt that she had to give these downloads a go.

Movable Type vs WordPress

movabletype.jpgWe’ve all read reams about how the blogging community has exploded over the last couple of years, but one of the more interesting developments in this field lies in a change of dynamic in the software that drives blogs. When members of the mainstream web community first decided to write about what their cat was doing for its birthday or purvey their views on the state of the candyfloss industry, the application of choice for creating a maintaining a blog was Six Apart’s Movable Type. After dominating the market for a long while, however, the app started began losing ground to WordPress, which tempted users away from the hosted, subscription-based model of MT with a tasty open source alternative.

Now Movable Type is looking to claw its way back to the top of the tree after releasing a Beta version of version 4 of the program, and announcing that it will once again be free to run a limited number of blogs using the service. The decision of whether to plump for MT or WP has split the blogging community for some time now and there some fairly solid arguments for and against using each app.
