Inject some fun into Skype with KishKishBefore too long Skype‘s popularity will overtake that of the humble the landline, as a means of phoning friends and loved ones. Aside from the cheapness of the VOIP system, one of the main reasons I cut off my home phone line was because of the sheer amount of extra things you can do with Skype, such as IM, video chat and file exchange. So if you don’t care that much about appearance, Foobar is definitely the player of choice for you.

Become part of the big software love-in

Wakoopa: the software social network siteIt has been around for a few months now, but I’ve just discovered the wonder of Wakoopa. The software social networking site is designed to keep tabs on the tools and games that you’re using on your PC or Mac and gives you access to a huge amount of information on the what’s hot and what’s not in the application world.

Thanks to intelligent tagging and categories, Wakoopa points you in the direction of programs that may be of interest to you, based on the type of software you use regularly. It’s great for making friends with like-minded computer users and people who enjoy the same apps as you, allowing you to hook up and share tasty tips for iTunes or exchange those treasured memories of the times you’ve used WinZip.

I was very impressed with the amount of live data and stats that Wakoopa provides, and I was unaware that some of the programs it listed on my page were even running. The popularity of the site proves that there is a strong community within the world of software. However, I’m not sure that I’ll keep with the service in case my boss catches me using Limewire or Windows Live Messenger when I’m supposed to be working.

Content-aware resizing technology gathers apace

VSO Image Resizer logoContent aware resizing technology is one of the new and exciting emerging aspects of imaging technology. It offers designers and image professionals a much more ‘intelligent’ way to resize and manipulate images. As it matures, it’s likely that programs such as VSO Image Resizer will become increasingly dated until they incorporate it. Indeed, many Photoshop fans will be hoping that it gets integrated into the next release.

One example of how this kind of resizing tool could look is provided by developer Patrick Swieskowski who has recently launched a demo that allows you to resize your images in Flash. Initial impression are positive although it works somewhat sluggishly at the moment. John Nack at Adobe first raised my attention to the possibilities this technology offers with his story about two Israeli developers who have been among the pioneers of it’s development. As Nack describes:

When scaling an image horizontally or vertically (e.g. making a panorama narrower), the technology looks for paths of pixels that can be removed while causing the least visual disruption. Just as interesting, if not more so, I think, is the way the technology can add pixels when increasing image dimension.

Microsoft’s Silverlight finally launched

Silverlight logoIf you remember, back in April we told you of the imminent release of Microsoft’s Silverlight , their “cross browser, cross platform plug-in for delivering rich media experiences”. Well, Silverlight is now out and you can finally install it and give it a try. This lightweight (1.4Mb) plug-in works on most popular browsers both on Mac and PC. It’s really simple to install, and you’ll just need to restart your browser to make it work. We went to the Silverlight home page to see the plug-in in action. Although it’s got a lot of snazzy effects, obviously set up by Microsoft to impress users, the plug-in worked smoothly and we experienced good image quality.

Silverlight can stream high resolution video well and supports HD quality videos.Developers will be glad to know that you can write managed .NET code that runs right in the browser. Using Expression Studio and Visual Studio (which are separate from Silverlight), designers and developers can build their own Rich Internet Applications with Silverlight.

On the downside, Silverlight supports Windows Media audio and video, VC-1 and MP3 but not other popular formats like H.264, Flash or AAC.
