Dark first person puzzler Hellraid: The Escape coming to Android October 2nd

Hellraid: The Escape is an action adventure game for Android made in cooperation with Techland, the team who developed Call of Juarez and Dead Island games.

Made with the impressive Unreal Engine, Hellraid: The Escape mixes first person action and puzzle elements in a game that sees you trying to escape a hellish tower filled with monsters and dungeons designed to trap you. You play a prisoner who has no memory of his identity, but is searching for another who can apparently free you.

Released for Android on October 2nd, Hellraid: The Escape will cost $2.99, but will get free updates and won’t have any in-app purchases or ‘pay to win’ elements.

As you can see in the trailer, Hellraid: The Escape is quite impressive. We checked out the iOS version, and found it to be suitably scary, and good looking if a little short.

iOS 8.1 will probably bring Apple Pay to iPhone users

Many people may still not have updated to iOS 8.0.2, but Apple is forging ahead with updates, and the next one, iOS 8.1, has already been pushed out to members of the Apple Developer Program.

The most significant change for this upcoming update is the inclusion of Apple Pay. This system will allow you to add credit and debit card details to your iPhone and pay for things with a combination of Near Field Communication and Touch ID.

On Twitter, users @hamzasood shared a screenshot of a new settings page in iOS where you can add your credit or debit card data for use with the system.

iOS 8.1 fixes yet more bugs, but appears not to add any more features apart from Apple Pay.

If you’re not in the Apple Developer program, the latest version of iOS is 8.0.2, which was hastily released after the previous version proved disastrous for iPhone 6 users.

Apple releases OS X Shellshock bug patch

Apple said last week that the vast majority of OS X users weren’t at risk of the Shellshock bash exploit; only advanced users who had manually configured advanced UNIX services may be at risk.

Regardless, Apple has released patches for OS X Mavericks, Lion, and Mountain Lion. The patch isn’t available through OS X automatic update yet. You have to manually download and install the patch for your respective version of OS X. Make sure you download the patch for your specific operating system.

If you’re running the public or developer versions of OS X Yosemite, there isn’t a patch available yet.

iOS 8 ‘Reset All Settings’ bug erases iCloud Drive

According to MacRumors, forum members have found that using the Reset All Settings option is permanently deleting documents from iCloud Drive. The option states that “No data or media will be deleted”, but it appears that some iOS 8 users are experiencing this problem.

MacRumors thinks the bug may be limited to iWork apps and not other documents stored on iCloud Drive. Yosemite users are seeing documents disappearing from their machines as well, with iCloud Drive synced between operating systems.

From one MacRumor forum member:

Because iOS 8 was so sluggish on my iPad 3 I reset all settings (No data or media will be deleted) and sped it up BUT deleted my iWork data! Then promptly synced and deleted it in iCloud.I have public beta of Yosemite so can’t roll back via time machine. I have no pre iOS 8 backups in iTunes or iCloud to revert to (well iCloud device backups don’t contain cloud documents and I should have iOS 7 backups in iTunes but can’t find any. iCloud has no trash like dropbox. They seem gone forever.

It’s not recommended that you reset any device running iOS 8 until this bug is addressed by Apple. Apple already had problems with iOS 8.0.1’s iPhone 6 cellular data bug and released 8.0.2 quickly after. Apple supplies Keynote, Numbers, and Pages for free to new device owners, and this bug could lead people to avoid Apple’s first party apps.

Waze 3.9 update remembers where you parked and adds ‘Places’

Waze is one of the best apps for directions and crowdsourced traffic information, and the latest update for Android and iOS, version 3.9, adds a feature that Google Now users might be familiar with – saving your parking location.

Waze 3.9 Places

Google Now saves your parking location by using GPS, but it doesn’t always accurately mark the location, giving more of a general idea. According to Waze, if you use the app until you park, it will save the parking location. That information will also be collected by Waze to “learn where to find parking & how much time to account.”

Another feature added is the ability to add places in the app.

Other updates in Waze 3.9 include:

– Waze Places

– Easily add or edit places, businesses, or residential areas

– Add driving related info, like if a place has a parking lot or a drive-thru

– Add arrival photos to help others find a place at any time

– The autocomplete search is now worldwide

– Bug fixes

Adobe Creative Cloud coming to Chrome OS, starting with Photoshop

Chrome OS is seen as an incomplete operating system because of the limitations for programs. Today, however, Adobe and Google announced a partnership to bring Adobe Creative Cloud to Chromebooks and Chrome OS.

One major weakness of Chrome OS was the inability to edit images and photos with powerful tools. The first beta will bring a streaming version of Photoshop to United States-based Adobe education customers with a paid CC subscription. This version of Photoshop requires an internet connection because it’s streaming from the cloud, but it’s integrated with Google Drive so that any changes you make will be saved.

According to Adobe’s information page, Project Photoshop Streaming can also be accessed from a Chrome browser, meaning that Adobe could bring the Creative Cloud suite through a browser in the future.

The requirements for submitting an application are strict, and while most people will find it hard to meet the requirements, it’s interesting to see Adobe and Google working together on this.

Video: Watch the new co-op game mode for Assassin’s Creed: Unity

A new Assassin’s Creed: Unity (Assassin’s Creed 5) trailer released by Ubisoft explains how co-operative play will work in the adventure game.

Apart from being able to play co-operatively, the biggest news from this trailer is the progression tree available for your character. Every assassin you create will have a core skill set: combat, navigation, and stealth. From there, you can build up your character’s skills and experience, making them more unique or closer to your style of play. However, Ubisoft has not gone as far as a classic role playing game – there are no ‘classes’ of assassin.

Default player

brightcove.createExperiences();

Each one starts with the same potential, and how their skills are developed is up to you. Stealth, Melee attacks, ranged attacks, or health could be the focus of your assassin. You’ll also be able to craft weapons as you play through the game.

Cooperative play is for up to four players, and each mission will be based on a real event from the French Revolution. They will also be ‘open ended’, allowing your team to decide how they should play out. We’ll have to wait till November 11th when Assassin’s Creed: Unity is released to see if it lives up to its promises.

What would Minecraft look like in Microsoft Excel?

As everyone knows, Minecraft creator Mojang was sold to Microsoft recently, and amongst all the commentary and fallout, YouTuber Seth Bling has created ‘Minecraft 2′ using Microsoft’s Excel as the game engine.

While this is a joke, there is actually a spreadsheet you can download to try ‘Minecraft 2’. It just requires a copy of Microsoft Excel to run it. The spreadsheet is very comprehensive, even including instructions. Not even the first Minecraft came with instructions! There’s a Title Screen, that does nothing, Game Screen, where you can move your character around, expense reports, and a workbench for crafting items just like in the original. As a joke, it’s surprisingly complete. Watch the video:

Since purchasing Minecraft and its parent company, Microsoft has said nothing concrete about its plans for the game. Despite fears that it may limit future development of the game on non-Microsoft platforms, it seems unlikely the Windows creators would seek to limit the popularity of the game. And of course, there have been no announcements about any ‘Minecraft 2’.

Ping, a free app that wants to send you interesting information

The creators of anonymous sharing app Secret have launched a new artificial intelligence app called Ping for iOS and Android. It’s designed to learn what you like, and send you notifications about things you’ll find interesting.

Ping is very minimal and simple. You don’t have to sign in or create an account, just open the app and pick some things that interest you. These options should evolve over time, as the app learns what you’re into. The point of all this? Eventually, Ping will learn your tastes, and will notify you about things that interest you without you having to look. As its creators put it, ‘why scavenge for content – it should come to you’. It might be a notification about the day’s weather, or a new movie.

According to its developers, Ping was first created over a weekend ‘hackathon’ with the theme of simplicity. That explains its interface, which is just text and a dot, which moves you through the app when touched.

Ping is an odd app to start with. Once you’ve tapped some subjects you’re into, nothing immediately happens. You have to wait until Ping has something interesting to say to you. Unlike Twitter, which you can open and browse actively, Ping is totally passive.
