“Eat the Rich” is a trend that gained popularity in movies and series, both dramatic and comedic, focusing on criticizing capitalism and analyzing society’s class division. Ah, yes, where the greedy and wealthy shine and the working-class folks scramble due to inequality and politics. And the plot happens when the tables are turned when they fight back to reverse the power with their genius plans to take down the rich folks.

It has been heavily thematized in modern pop culture by gaining popularity since 2019 with movies like Hustlers, Parasite, Knives out, and Ready or Not.

An increase in “Eat the Rich” movies was seen in 2022 with the Knives Out sequel Glass Onion, the exaggerated Palme d’Or victor Triangle of Sadness, and the series The White Lotus, leaving the rich sulking in their misery.

The 2022 sequel to Knives Out features the great Benoit Blanc again to crack the case. The wealthy Miles Bron invites his closest capitalist friends to join his faux murder mystery party until he has an actual murder on his hands.

Funnier than the original, the Glass Onion scorn vapid influencers, fabricated intellectualism, and tech posturing. The alliance between the upper class in sanctioning the diabolic impulses of high society. I had fun watching this sequel with its twists and turns, but watching the high and mighty fall was the best plot for this movie.

The White Lotus (series)

The series title is nominative with a luxurious beach resort where wealthy white people vacation, and for some reason, they leave worse off than when they arrived at the location.

Although the execution might appear subtle, its agenda is crystal clear. It could seem somewhat confusing to viewers what the series is trying to achieve. It’s filled with filthy rich people and cheeky pompous rich folks collaborating while sipping cocktails on dark pretentious matters.

Triangle of Sadness (2022 Movie)

Triangle of Sadness is another 2022 movie stabs the 1% from writer/director Ruben Östlund. It also won the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. It is about the Instagram influencer couple embarking on an elite European cruise. After a wild night, there seems to be a catastrophe when the cruise trip for the filthy rich sinks and the high society guests are stranded on a deserted island and become the working class.

The Platform (2019 Movie)

From humor we move on to drama with this science fiction dystopia directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. The movie, which is on Netflix, was a hit in 2019 when it won the Best Film award at the Sitges Film Festival, and its anti-rich message is evident.

The film starring Iván Massagué imagines a future world in which part of the population is confined to “the hole,” a inhospitable place filled with plants in which food is distributed vertically. Therefore, those on the lower levels receive almost no food, and must search for it themselves.

Don’t Look Up (2021 Movie)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, this film by Adam McCay was a brutal success when it premiered on Netflix. It is, again, a high-flying comedy, and its message is not only against the rich, but against society as a whole. However, it is the elites who come off worst.

From the President of the United States (played by Meryl Streep) to a pseudo Elon Musk brought to life by Mark Rylance, this film leaves no rich man with a head.

Parasite (2019 Movie)

But if there is one film that made it clear that the Eat the Rich message is necessary, it is Parasites. The film directed by Bong Joon-ho jumped from South Korea to Los Angeles, winning a well-deserved Oscar for Best Picture.

The film is about a poor South Korean family that, little by little, “parasites” a rich man’s house. All the members of the family are naughtily integrated into the household, each with different roles. But the plot twists are not long in coming.

Succession (Series)

HBO Max is a perfect place for marathons of series about rich people, and Succession is the best example of this. The fiction starring Hiam Abbass and Brian Cox presents several siblings who are heirs to a large company. And, as it could not be otherwise, the death of the progenitor causes them all to fight among themselves to see who gets the best part.

The series has a subtle and wonderful humorous tone, and does not hesitate to present several themes that, linked together, generate a very interesting critique of being a millionaire.

The Menu (2022 Movie)

The latest film to join the list is The Menu, the recently released film starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult. This time they take the Eat the Rich concept to the kitchen, with a mix between black humor and horror that is, to say the least, surprising.

The film features spectacular performances by the entire cast, but also some funny (and some horrifying) moments that make it an experience to be admired.

I am excited to see what 2023 will deliver with the comical and dramatic trends as many will; after all, we survived a pandemic that lasted three years!

Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland charged with domestic violence

The spotlight is on Justin Roiland, but not in a positive light for this co-creator and star of the adult animated comedy series “Rick and Morty”, he currently has to deal with a felony domestic violence charge in Orange County, California. In May 2020 there was a criminal complaint filed by the Orange County District Attorney regarding a 2020 incident with the woman he was dating at the time.

According to prosecutors, in the criminal complaint filed, the charges against Roiland are fraud, violence or deceit, false imprisonment by menace, and corporal injury against the woman he was dating and living with at the time. The woman is referred to as ‘Jane Doe’ in court documents and doesn’t want to be identified. He, however, has pleaded not guilty to all the allegations brought against him.

The media was unaware of Roiland’s charges until it was reported by NBC News. The incident transpired in January 2020 and he was then charged in May of the same year. 

In August 2020 Roiland was arrested but released again on a $50,000 bond. Roiland had to return to court in October of that year and during that time a protective order was put in place and will remain as such until October 2023. The protective order stipulates that he may not surveil, threaten, or harass the person named in the order nor come within 100 feet of the person. Part of the order was that Roiland had to turn in all and any firearms he possessed or owned.

On Thursday Roiland attended a court hearing in which his lawyer informed the judge that his client has a pending plea deal but no further details were provided. There will be another hearing on 27 April.

“It is hard to overstate how inaccurate the recent media coverage of this situation has been,” stated Edward Welbourn, Mr Roiland’s attorney, in a statement.

“To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

As the world continued to go on about their business without the knowledge of the charges against Roiland, so too did he continue living his life. In 2022, he released a new video game “High on Life.” The player becomes a bounty hunter in the game who commences on numerous missions to eliminate various targets in progressively eccentric worlds.

What makes this game so interesting is that the four available guns have faces that face the player and react and talk with quirky lines while playing. Kind of makes me wonder what has been going through his mind deciding to try out the game world and the thought process of a game like this…

Too Good to be True? Microsoft staff will have ‘unlimited’ vacation days

No, this is not fake news. Kathleen Hogan in Microsoft (chief people officer) has announced this via email to US employees, explaining how it will bring about a more ‘flexible model’ to the vacation policy.

Microsoft is discarding its PTO (paid time off) vacation policy for the unlimited option of not being required to log paid leave days or accumulate vacations. The UPTO (unlimited paid time off) policies are the next best thing to keep and attract talented finance, tech, and other divisions with employee shortages.

Microsoft will launch this new policy on January 16 this year and apply it to all new staff who will no longer have to accumulate vacation time. They will keep other leave of absence categories and its ten corporate holidays. The employees will receive once-off payments for unused vacation in April. But this policy will not apply to their hourly workers and only to US staff.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the next step was to move into a more flexible working environment hence the new DTO policy.

End of depression? The first brain implant to treat depression starts human trials

It has come to my attention that doctors in St Louis unveiled the technology in September by shaving off a small part of a patient’s skull and replacing it with electrodes. By implanting these electrodes, they hope that small and short electric pulses could alleviate the patient’s severe depression by easing the condition in the brain.

The start-up Inner Cosmos performed the surgery and is currently just one of several businesses focusing on this technology. Of course, one such business, Neuralink owned by none other than Elon Musk. Although it appears that the business has been accountable for some controversy even though they have claimed that they trained monkeys to use their minds to play video games. 

At the core of tech companies and growing is Inner Cosmos developing implanted devices for the brain. The first-of-its-kind trial uses implants in the skull’s bone to treat depression. It is a significant accomplishment for scientists’ efforts to utilize hardware to treat human mood disorders.

The hardware created by Inner Cosmos is around the size of a penny. The aim is for a pulse to be sent to a patient’s left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which then measures neuronal activity, determining the correct amount of stimulation. It occurs for around 15 minutes once a day.

The focus is that the first trial will continue for a year while considering involving a few more patients. 

However, how to stimulate the best part of the brain to achieve the desired outcome is currently being determined. But that being said Inner Cosmos technique targets another area that also features another method – transcranial magnetic stimulation. 

Although it’s in its early days, this is a unique technology that can be the answer to many depression patients that has lost hope.

The aim is for a non-invasive surgery to achieve the best results, and some businesses are focusing on entirely surgery-free methods. For Inner Cosmos’ first time, the device is a bit larger than what they aim for their final product.

It’s not an entirely new idea, as similar techniques to treat Parkinson’s and epilepsy have been used for years, but it’s still very new to depression treatment.

Elon Musk disclosed that Neuralink’s brain implant device would only undergo human trials within six months.

It could be incredible if everything goes according to plan for Elon Musk after his show-and-tell presentation regarding the technology. The presentation showed how a test monkey has learned to use its brain to move a computer’s cursor.

It allowed the monkey to say something and spell words, but seeing the small implant on the live stream was difficult. Obviously, the animal couldn’t actively spell words because it doesn’t understand our language. It was still able to operate a computer with its thoughts.

“More companies are trying to do less and less invasive things because that always makes a product easier to adopt and the path to market shorter,” said Max Hodak, former chief operating officer of Neuralink, who started his startup Science Inc. “But I think that long term, the most astonishing products will require an implant.”

Fortnite brings back the Plague Doc Skin after 3 years.

After three years, the Plague Doc Skin has returned to Fortnite, and many believe that the Covid pandemic influenced its absence. If you have enjoyed the Fortnite version of Battle Royale, you will see this epic male player skin with the Scourge, which is the female version. The Plague Doc Skin can change the appearance of a player’s avatar but be realistic about the fact that you don’t get any added benefits or functions to the Plague outfit!

Is it just old news, or should we still be worried about this? Rumour has it that WhatsApp won’t work on millions of devices worldwide as their supported lifespan will end. Users with older devices could end up losing the messaging app which so many of us rely on to stay connected to family and friends.
