Is Mastodon really the only alternative to Twitter?

As Elon Musk stepped in as the ‘Master Twit’ of Twitter, many followers are considering leaving the app nest and moving on to greener social pastures. With the current Twitter dilemma unfolding and making newsfeed headlines, followers have started migrating to Mastodon, but is this, in fact, the better alternative for Twitter?

Let’s take a closer look at what the Mastodon fuss is about before giving up on tweeting altogether.

What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is a microblogging site founded in 2016 by Eugen Rochko, a German software developer dissatisfied with Twitter. But unlike other social media sites such as Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc., Mastodon is a nonprofit that aims to benefit the public instead of the shareholders.

Mastodon could be compared to Twitter, Discord and Reddit and seen as a hybrid of these social platforms:

  • Individual communities are referred to as “instances”, which appear like mastodon.social in a user’s URL bar – similar to Discord and subreddits.
  • Mastodon also features tabs for trending news and hashtags.
  • As with Twitter, you can follow accounts and people which appear similar when scrolling through content.

What are the issues new users have with Mastodon?

Firstly it can be challenging to find a server to join, especially when people are swamping servers which can cause waitlist creation, and some of those running a server don’t make it easy to find the values and rules of their servers.

Maintaining servers also has significant technical and financial challenges, which grow with the increased activity and members. There is the possibility of membership fees to cover the server hosting costs.

The most considerable tension could be considered when favoriting, following and finding. It has come to my attention that help is needed once you locate someone to follow. It becomes a hassle for something that should be a simple action to complete. There seems to be a similar issue when boosting or favoriting a post. Searching and finding people to follow could be intimidating for new users adding to the frustration of starting anew with microblogging.

But with the possibility of a Twitter meltdown, should the frustrations continue growing, it makes sense to explore other potential Twitter alternatives.

Twitter alternatives to consider

Mastodon

Mastodon is an open-source alternative to Twitter which offers more control over conversations and what you see. It can be used as individual “instances, ” meaning you can access specifically designed versions, generally topic-themed. You can have an instance and run a social network as an open-source.

Discord

Discord, another alternative, is as straightforward as Mastodon and can set up a chat server for any cause. All topics and servers are available, which might be thought of as “live chat Reddit” in Discord. Even though Discord started as a chat forum for online gamers, it has grown beyond that, and now you can upload media, host video chats, record voice chats and much more.

Instagram

Most users that use Twitter can be found on Instagram, and many would consider it an alternative to Twitter. It also allows you to follow other accounts and supports hashtags. But more importantly, many users already use Instagram and are four times more active than Twitter.

Instagram is also very user-friendly, which could be a more obvious alternative.

Gab

Gab chose a free speech-focused service and has become an “alt-right” alternative to Twitter. Although in 2016 Apple App Store banned Gab, in 2017, the app was removed by Google from the Play Store, stating: “demonstrate a sufficient level of moderation, including for content that encourages violence and advocates hate against groups of people.”

It is a shame, though, as it is a valuable platform with 300-character status updates and a UI that appears as a combination of Twitter and Facebook.

Parler

Parler is considered a more conservative social media platform. Creating an account and posting is quick and straightforward. You can also like (upvoted), share (echoed) and reply, which is the same as Twitter.

Interesting fun fact: the rapper Kanye West purchased Parler in October 2022.

What is your alternative to Twitter?

Whether you have reached your limits with all the Twitter madness reaching newsfeeds or want to remain a “crawler”  and see the drama unfold is entirely up to you! But hopefully, these alternatives keep your spirits up instead of getting caught up in Elon Musk’s recent twitting decisions.

And although there are some hiccups with Mastodon, there were a few in Twitter’s early days, so only time will tell. With 474,000 new Mastodon accounts growing, Rochko said that Mastodon has increased to more than a million users that use the social network daily.

With a bit of patience, Mastodon could be a great alternative, but rather do your research before you take the final step of flying the Twitter nest. Ultimately we all use microblogging for different reasons, and you need to fit the best alternative to suit your needs. So whether you continue to tweet or would instead start tooting, I hope you find your followers easy and share posts wisely.

Twitch Streamer Caught With Deepfake Porn Of Friends Returns, Wants To Help

It has been several weeks since the DeepFake porn controversy, and Brandon “Atrioc” Ewing returned to Twitch to update fans on his fight against DeepFakes of streamers.

Atrioc made headlines earlier this year for his accidental confession on his stream to paying for DeepFakes of female streamers, some of which was friends he knows/knew.

When reality hit him after the leak, he faced his actions, went live with an emotional apology, and promised to redeem his mistakes. He admitted to doing this. He will step away from content creation and focus on working with a law firm to take down DeepFakes across the internet.

During this week, Atroic updated people on the situation by going live for the first time in six weeks. He has shared information about working with various people to help affected victims and take down DeepFake websites and videos.

He mentioned the best AI-developed tools by the company Ceartas. The AI tool automatically takes down stolen content from creators, and DeepFakes fall into that category. The algorithm requires a lot of data which is part of the issue with a need for creators willing to assist.

Twitch

Atrioc also shared his involvement with some prominent creators impacted by the DeepFake situation, like QTCinderella, Pokimane, and Maya Higa, to help them. Amouranth asked for help taking down the fabricated content depicting her: “She had heard about the work I was doing somehow, and she asked if I could help her get stuff taken down.”

Thus far, he has shut down thousands of sites using the help of other creators and the algorithm. Even though it’s still a work in progress, he admitted he would only provide regular content or stream occasionally.

Satish Kaushik: Bollywood Actor and Director Passes Away aged 66

Satish Kaushik, a Bollywood actor-filmmaker, passed away after a heart attack on March 8 in Gurugram. Kaushik was in Gurugram visiting a friend when his health deteriorated, and he requested his driver to take him to the hospital. Sadly, he suffered a heart attack on their way, and they couldn’t save him.

On Thursday, his body was transferred from Gurugram’s Fortis hospital for a postmortem at Delhi’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital. Upon completing his autopsy, Kaushik’s mortal remains were flown home that afternoon to Mumbai.

Condolence has streamed in from Bollywood celebs such as Sharad Kelkar, Kangana Ranaut, Abhishek Bachchan, and Ajay Devgn, among several others, and a tribute tweet from Union minister Amit Shah.

They performed the last rites of Kaushik at the Versova crematorium in Mumbai. Many stars visited Kaushik’s residence to pay their respects, with Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Javed Akhtar, Sham Kaushal, and Anupam Kher among them.

Satish Kaushik suffered a heart attack and died at age 66

“I know “death is the ultimate truth of this world!” But I never thought in my dreams that I would write this thing about my best friend #SatishKaushik while alive. Such a sudden full stop on a friendship of 45 years!! Life will NEVER be the same without you SATISH! Om Shanti!” – Kher wrote in his tribute.

Satish Kaushik was an Indian screenwriter, comedian, producer, actor, and director. He started his career in theatre and was an alumnus of the National School of Drama and Film and Television Institute of India. He had a long and storied career and worked on almost 100 films. We will remember him for his memorable roles in Mr. India, Deewana Mastana, Brick Lane, Saajan Chale Sasural, and others. As a director, Kaushik worked on films such as Tere Naam, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Prem, and Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.

Chaim Topol: Fiddler on the Roof star dies aged 87

Chaim Topol, Israeli singer and actor best known for his role in the musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ as Tevye the dairyman, has passed away at 87. Topol was globally known for his dancing, acting, and singing journey in the 1971 film version “If I Were A Rich Man” and other hits on screen and on stage.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted on Twitter, “My wife and I, and all the citizens of Israel, with deep pain, are parting from our dear Chaim Topol – loved by the audience and one of the great artists of Israel.”

Born in 1935 in Tel Aviv, Topol found a comedy cast after completing military service. In 1961 he featured in his first on-screen role in “I Like Mike” and won his first Golden Globe in 1964 for his part in the comedy film Sallah Shabbati.

Topol again stepped onto the red carpet for another Golden Globe award for his performance as Tevye for Best Actor in a Film Musical or Comedy and a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

“Topol was a gifted actor who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and especially entered deep into our hearts.” – stated Israel’s President Isaac Herzog.

In 1991 he reprised the role of Tevye in the Broadway revival of ‘Fiddler On the Roof’ which awarded him a nomination for Best Actor for a Tony Award. Topol once claimed that he had played this part more than 3,500 times globally on stages from the late 60s until 2009.

Chaim Topol

Omor Topol spoke about his father this week: “amazing actor who developed all kinds of tactics to cover up the problems that began to arise.”

“When he won the Israel Prize, his Alzheimer’s was in its early stages,” he confirmed. “He spoke wonderfully at the ceremony and also at other events, and no one even felt it.”

Who is Mae Muller, the UK’s Eurovision entrant?

Who is Mae Muller, the new entrant at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest representing the United Kingdom?

Hoping she will follow Sam Ryder’s success last year, the 25-year-old will be performing her track at the competition in May “I Wrote A Song.” Muller stated, “To compete in such a massive music competition is simply brilliant,” describing it as “a dream.”

The BBC followed last year’s selection process, working with a management company to confirm the act making the UK one of the last to reveal its song for 2023.

Perhaps a coincidence, but the last year the UK won Eurovision in 1997 is the same year Muller was born (who knows, maybe it’s a sign)!

Muller enthusiastically shared, “I’m a huge fan of so many of the artists that have found success at Eurovision, from ABBA to Måneskin,”

“Sam Ryder was so amazing last year and proved the UK can be back on the left-hand side of the leaderboard.”

The UK received its most remarkable result in 20 years in last year’s contest when Ryder came second. With that in mind, Muller shared her awareness that she had big shoes to fill.

Muller says, “This is obviously such a level up from anything I’ve ever done, and I can really feel it.” but optimistically confirmed, “You’ve got to go big, and you’ve got to do it right.”

Ryder shared a congratulating Instagram video for Muller’s selection and has already been in touch to share some tips for the Eurovision Contest.

“You’re in for the most wild, inexplicable ride and I’m chuffed for you,” Ryder said. “Have a blast.”

Who is UK’s Eurovision’s 2023 entrant: Mae Muller?

Most of the songs and acts of the 37 competing countries have confirmed who will be going to Liverpool, with the deadline set for 13 March. Typically a Eurovision entrant is chosen in two ways: A national TV show winner selection or an internal selection where someone is selected behind the scenes.

Commonly the winning country will host the following year. Still, due to the circumstances surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the organizers ruled it too dangerous and requested BBC to host instead.

It has been confirmed that May’s event tickets sold out in 90 minutes.

Discover the Fascinating World of Google Bard AI: Learn How to Use it with These Chatbot Examples and More!

Will Google Bard be the “ChatGPT killer?” I guess that is what most ChatGPT users are wondering about (myself included)! Bard is an experimental conversational AI service developed by Google and built on LaMDA technology. The chatbot is programmed to utilize the web to source the most relevant answers to questions.

As a chosen beta tester, you can access the Google AI chatbot by opening your Google app on your smartphone, where you will find the chatbot icon. Then it’s smooth sailing as you would on ChatGPT – enter your prompt and press down on that enter button.

And you are good to go by starting a conversation with the chatbot by making requests and asking it questions. Google is also actively attempting to enhance and improve the chatbot’s capabilities to provide users with exciting and new ways to interact with information.

Bard AI use cases

According to Google, its AI chatbot features numerous potential uses to simplify its user’s life and fill in knowledge gaps. Here are some of the most expected ones to look forward to:

  • Get answers: If you have a query, you can ask the chatbot, which will use its sophisticated AI algorithms to generate a thoughtful and appropriate response.
  • Find information with the standard engine: Whether you’re looking for a weather report or the latest sports scores, the Google Bard AI chatbot can help powered by the search engine.
  • Automate tasks: The Google AI-powered chatbot can automatically take care of several activities, such as making a restaurant reservation or booking a flight. The new chatbot also has the expectancy to be able to buy them for you! Google was already finding them for you.
  • Your personal AI assistant: The Google Bard AI chatbot can assist you in managing your time and ensuring that you never miss an appointment or forget to complete a critical step in a process.
  • Social hub: The chatbot can also function as a social hub, facilitating user conversations in group and one-on-one settings.
How To Use Google Bard AI: Chatbot's Examples And More

“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.” -CEO Sundar Pichai.

To reduce the energy and time spent on computation, Google is developing a “lightweight model version of LaMDA.” Unfortunately, the Bard AI chatbot has yet to be widely available. Only a few users can access the Google Bard AI link for testing purposes. However, once the Bard AI link is shared, it will likely be integrated into Google Search and can be accessed by asking questions through the search bar.

Stay Ahead of the Game with 2023’s Cutting-Edge iPhone and iPad Software

We have just stepped into 2023, and there’s already excitement around many in-development features to be released by Apple even before the iOS17 launch. There has been transparency from Apple’s side around introducing the new features for its core software on iPhone and iPad, including Apple Pay, Apple Music, HomeKit, and CarPlay.

The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 event was the platform for Apple, where they revealed the next-generation CarPlay update. The new version of the infotainment system is looking at introducing multiple support screens for CarPlay. CarPlay could feature an alternative to the UI of each manufacturer to emphasize fuel levels, speed, temperature, and extras via the instrument cluster.

There is talk about including radio controls, personalization, and widgets for Music and Weather on the vehicle’s dashboard. However, there has been no announcement regarding the release date of the new CarPlay system nor which vehicles it will support.

Apple had an intended vision for its users by improving the reliability and performance of its home accessories. The new architecture was released by Apple for HomeKit with the iOS 16.2 launch on an opt-in basis. However, with an overload of complaints, this architecture was quickly delisted in December.

Apple has stated that “A fix will be available soon.”

Another announcement Apple shared at WWDC 2022 was the expected support for web notifications for Safari on iPasOS and iOS. However, Apple confirmed its launch sometime in 2023, so we will have to wait and see when it will be! The Safari feature has been absent in the recent iOS 16 beta, and once available, it should be able to push notifications from websites as it currently does on Mac.

The latest iPhone and iPad software features are coming in 2023, according to Apple

On track for 2023 is the iMessage Contact Key feature that provides an extra layer of security for users who prefer to verify who is on the other side of the call. For instance, journalists, government officials, etc., will notice when an unauthorized device is associated with another user account.

And last but not least, Apple Pay may hold a few software features in 2023. First in line is the Apple Pay Later feature, which allows users to split purchases into four payments across six weeks with 0% interest.

The latest iPhone and iPad software features are coming in 2023, according to Apple

Secondly, a dedicated Appl Card Savings Account allows users to deposit Daily Cash regards into the account automatically. It utilizes Apple Wallet, and users can track their account growth and balance. Unfortunately, both these features are exclusively available in the U.S., but hopefully, in the future, Apple will be able to expand it globally.
