BYD, China’s electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse, has reported a record-breaking sales week, registering nearly 68,000 vehicles between May 5 and May 11, 2025.
This marks a remarkable 15% increase from the previous week and reinforces BYD’s commanding position in the EV market. In stark contrast, Tesla managed to log just over 3,000 vehicles during the same period, representing a staggering 69% decline compared to last year.
The latest figures reflect a broader trend among Chinese automakers, with brands like NIO and XPeng also posting solid gains.
BYD Expands Globally while Tesla Struggles to Compete
NIO recorded 6,060 vehicles sold, an 18.2% increase, while XPeng outperformed expectations with 6,870 registrations, marking a 23.8% rise. Other competitors, such as Xiaomi and ZEEKR, also demonstrated strong performances, with Xiaomi registering 5,180 vehicles and ZEEKR following closely with 4,310.
While BYD continues to dominate the domestic scene, its global sales have also shown vigorous growth. The automaker sold over 79,000 vehicles abroad in April, surpassing Tesla in crucial markets like Germany and the UK. This momentum is expected to continue as BYD expands its manufacturing capabilities across Europe, Mexico, and Southeast Asia.
In an attempt to boost demand, Tesla has extended its 0% financing offer through June 30. However, the company’s performance remains under scrutiny, with April sales dipping 9% to approximately 28,731 vehicles, contrasting sharply with BYD’s impressive figure of over 380,000 total new energy vehicles sold in the same month.
As BYD broadens its offerings into new segments like luxury EVs and supercars, its trajectory appears set for further expansion. As industry dynamics evolve, Tesla will need to adapt quickly to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded Chinese market.
