Destiny 2 brings back The Red War and Forsaken: Bungie confirms unvaulting
Bungie said on September 21, 2026 that Destiny 2 is getting an unvaulting update, bringing back content that had been removed. That includes The Red War and Forsaken campaigns, plus their destinations and raids.
Forbes reporter Paul Tassi says the restored campaigns, raids, and locations are expected to be free for everyone, even players who never bought them the first time around. If that holds, it should make Destiny 2’s story a lot easier to follow and address one of the game’s oldest complaints: too much of its history was cut out of the game.
Still, this doesn’t sound like a full live-service revival. After the Monument of Triumph update in June 2026, Destiny 2 was pretty clearly shifted into maintenance mode, with major bug fixes as the main priority. So this reads less like a relaunch and more like Bungie trying to preserve parts of the game that had been lost.
If Destiny 2’s missing history has bothered you, this will probably be worth downloading. Just don’t expect everything to come back. Seasonal storylines and events aren’t guaranteed, and neither is every Strike, Crucible map, Gambit map, or seasonal activity. Even with these campaign returns, there could still be story gaps rather than a full one-to-one restoration.
Destiny 2 is already available on its current platforms, but Bungie still hasn’t given a release date for the restored content. Tassi’s guess is sometime next year, while Bungie says the work is technically difficult and will take time, especially after the heavy layoffs in 2026.
