In the early 2000s, television began to shine like never before. Although it was in the 90s that the idea started to germinate that it could have prestige and importance, it wouldn’t be until a decade later that it was truly considered that there could be something valuable and not just mere entertainment to pass the time on it. It was thanks to HBO networks, with high-quality series and cinematic packaging, but also CBS and other networks that were interested in raising the quality.
There are many series from that era that had a lot to do with the explosion of television as we know it today. Naming them all is absurd and would be enough for a book. But what we can mention is the specific series that is now returning with a sequel and has taken the American audience and critics by storm: Dexter.
A legendary series from Showtime
If you’ve been living under a rock, Dexter is the adaptation of a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay. With eight seasons and three showrunners aired between 2006 and 2013, the series starred Michael C. Hall, who was catapulted to stardom thanks to it, and although it is remembered with passion today, its last two seasons were not without their detractors. But let’s not kid ourselves. The series finale was watched by 2.8 million viewers, shattering all the network’s records and setting a staggering figure even for today.
Surprisingly, they let the series rest for a long time. Its first sequel would not arrive until 2021 with a single season and a rather lukewarm reception, under the name Dexter: New Blood. And more recently it was rescued again, with better reception among the audience but with no enthusiasm from the critics, at the end of 2024 with Dexter: Original Sin.
With this background, upon the announcement of Dexter: Resurrection, a direct sequel to Dexter: New Blood, fans and critics were not exactly thrilled at the idea of a new Dexter series. But the reality is that this new series, consisting of ten episodes, has exceeded everyone’s expectations. Rescuing much of the tone from the second half of the original, with many familiar faces like Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage in significant roles, and some truly wild twists, the series has managed to captivate both critics and audiences.
Sweeping Among Critics and Audiences
With 3.1 million viewers in its first three days, it is the most-watched premiere on Showtime’s streaming service. Surpassing Original Sin by 44% and Dexter New Blood by 76%. But even critics seem much more inclined to acknowledge its value. Although it has a modest 65 out of 100 on Metacritic, it boasts an excellent 95% approval rating from 59 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating that this is indeed the comeback that its fans were waiting for.
It also helps that this is the first of the series, since the original Dexter, whose plot seems to have a focus beyond being a Dexter series. Focusing on the search for his son and always pursued by Captain Ángel Batista, he will encounter a society of serial killers that will end up getting in his way. Because as we have already said, if there is one thing to expect from this new season, it is much more madness.
