Tesla has officially severed ties with Omead Afshar, its head of operations for North America and Europe, a controversial figure whose tenure was marked by both significant projects and tumultuous controversies.
This decision, made by CEO Elon Musk, comes amidst a worrying decline in sales for the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, particularly in Europe where demand has dropped sharply despite record incentives.
Afshar’s rise at Tesla was rapid, following his role as Musk’s chief of staff. He previously worked in biomedical engineering at St. Jude Medical and had a brief stint at Abbott before transitioning into Tesla, where he played a vital role in the construction of Gigafactory Texas.

However, his career at the automaker was marred by a scandal involving an order for ‘special glass’ for a secret project, which triggered an internal investigation. This controversy led to his temporary reassignment to SpaceX as speculation arose that he was taking the blame for Musk’s ambitions.
Despite these setbacks, Afshar was promoted to Vice President of Operations just two years later, but the persistent struggles within Tesla’s sales department seem to have sealed his fate.
Reports suggest that the automaker’s declining sales can be traced back to a lack of new vehicle launches and Musk’s leadership decisions, notably the delayed rollout of the Cybertruck—Tesla’s only new model in the past five years.
Sources indicate that Tesla’s deliveries are projected to plummet quarter-over-quarter in both Europe and China, with an estimated decline of about 90,000 units compared to last year.
As the automaker grapples with these challenges, the question remains: can Musk’s approach regain consumer confidence, or will Tesla continue to face headwinds in the competitive EV landscape?
