EVE Online’s Carbon engine goes open source: Trinity and Destiny hit GitHub

Fenris Creations has opened up major pieces of EVE Online’s Carbon engine on GitHub today, including Trinity, Destiny, and more than two dozen graphics, physics, and simulation modules. Trinity is the graphics side. Destiny handles physics and pathfinding for the massive fleet fights EVE Online is famous for, which makes this feel like a real engine release, not just a token gesture.

Most of that code is being published under the MIT License, Fenris Creations says, so the terms are pretty generous. You can use it, change it, and redistribute it for tools, prototypes, plus fan or community projects.

The studio says it wants the release to lead to shared improvements, more transparency, and better long-term support across the broader EVE universe. At the same time, it’s not pretending there aren’t risks around bots, cheats, and security, and it isn’t putting every sensitive live-service system out in the open.

If you keep up with EVE Online or work in game tech, this one’s probably worth a look, especially because Fenris Creations says it spoke with the Godot team before making the move. Early reaction from the community also looks good so far, with developers and players already poking through the code to see how EVE Online’s large-scale systems actually work.
