The Ford F-150 Lightning has reclaimed its position as the best-selling electric pickup in the United States, surpassing Tesla’s Cybertruck in the first quarter of 2025.
According to the latest registration data from S&P Global Mobility, Ford’s electric truck recorded 7,913 registrations, while the Cybertruck trailed with 7,126.
This marks a significant shift; after its launch in 2023, the Cybertruck had rapidly outpaced the Lightning to dominate the market last year.
Tesla Cybertruck Falls Behind as Ford Surges Ahead in Q1 2025 Sales
Breaking down the numbers further, in March alone, the F-150 Lightning achieved 2,598 registrations compared to the Cybertruck’s 2,170. Despite its comeback, the Lightning’s sales have seen a decline, falling 16% in April 2025 with only 1,740 units sold. Year-to-date, Ford has registered 8,927 electric trucks, a drop of 9% from 2024’s totals.
As Ford and Tesla continue to lead the electric pickup market, other competitors are gaining traction. General Motors reported robust sales of its electric models, with the Chevy Silverado EV selling 2,383 units and the GMC Sierra EV at 1,249 in the first quarter.
This surge helped GM surpass Ford, making it the second-best-selling EV brand in the U.S. with nearly 8,500 registrations—an impressive 274% increase year-over-year.
Meanwhile, Tesla remains a formidable presence overall, having secured over 51,000 registrations in March alone, showing slight growth despite a recent trend of declining year-over-year sales growth. On the horizon, Ram’s electric 1500 REV pickup has been delayed until the summer of 2027 due to quality validation concerns, suggesting that the competitive landscape for electric trucks is still in a state of flux.
