Gaming industry faces ‘Crash 2.0’: layoffs rise despite growth

Edge Magazine is calling 2026 the gaming industry’s “Crash 2.0,” a slump defined by layoffs, studio closures, and slower growth. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney puts it bluntly in the report: it’s the worst stretch the business has seen since the 1980s.

The numbers make the case. Edge says layoffs and closures ran right through 2022 to 2026, including 15,600 job cuts in 2024 and a projected 14,666 in 2026. A 2026 Game Developers Conference survey found that 33% of US developers and 28% of developers worldwide had been laid off over a two-year period. Revenue growth also cooled hard after the COVID-era surge, dropping from 13% in 2017-2021 to 1% in 2021-2023.

The pressure is especially visible in Western AAA. Edge’s report points to weak US and UK console sales in 2024 and the broader instability hitting major studios, all of it putting strain on that model even though the market still reached $322.6 billion in 2025 and continues to grow, just at a slower pace.

A lot of the momentum is moving elsewhere, especially to Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East. Edge reports that China and the US accounted for more than half of 2024 revenue, while more developers are turning to Indie Fund, UK Games Fund grants, Kickstarter, and new indie studios founded by AAA veterans who were laid off.

If you follow game development closely, this Edge Magazine report sounds worth your time. John Romero and Brenda Romero describe the moment as harsher than the 1980s, while Tim Willits points to easier development tools, mobile, and Fortnite as signs of an industry changing shape rather than simply falling apart.
