House Velaryon in House of the Dragon: why it fades by Game of Thrones

House Velaryon is back in the spotlight because of HBO’s House of the Dragon. That renewed attention also answers a question some viewers have when they move into Game of Thrones: by the time of Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and the War of the Five Kings, House Velaryon barely registers.

In George R.R. Martin’s lore, the Velaryons were a Valyrian house based on Driftmark, near Dragonstone. Unlike House Targaryen, they were never dragonlords. Their strength came from the sea, from ships, trade, and the kind of reach that turns a noble family into a serious political ally. After Aegon’s Conquest, that made them indispensable. They often served as Master of Ships, and they mattered to the crown because they helped keep supply lines open and the capital within reach.

In Fire & Blood, Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, is the figure who turns that influence into staggering wealth. He makes nine great voyages across Essos and farther afield, and by the end of it House Velaryon is richer than the Lannisters. Add its marriages into House Targaryen, and the family becomes a political force on another level. HBO’s House of the Dragon also presents the Velaryons as a Black noble house, drawing on an idea Martin has said he once considered himself.

The short answer to why House Velaryon fades from view is simple enough, and brutal. In Fire & Blood, the family backs Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons, and the cost is enormous. Losses that include the Battle of the Gullet break the house. Its fleets are wrecked, its heirs cut down, its wealth drained away, and its influence goes with it, until House Velaryon is left as a lesser house sworn to Dragonstone.

You can watch House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones on HBO and Max. HBO also has the animated Nine Voyages in the works, which is set to cover Corlys Velaryon’s travels and that vanished age of Westerosi power.
