Hyundai has officially unveiled the ELEXIO, its first custom-designed electric SUV tailored for the Chinese market.
Set to launch in the second half of 2025, the ELEXIO reflects the company’s commitment to its “In China, for China, to the World” strategy, acknowledging China as a critical battleground for global automotive dominance in the rapidly evolving EV market.
The launch comes at a strategic moment for Hyundai, which has seen significant improvement in its financial performance in China.
ELEXIO Set to Launch in 2025 as Hyundai’s Bold Move in China’s EV Arena
Beijing Hyundai reported a net loss reduction from 146 billion won ($105 million) in the first quarter of 2024 to 42.3 billion won ($72 million) in the same period this year, marking a substantial rebound. This recovery is attributed to lower operating costs after the sale of its Chongqing plant and a remarkable increase in exports—up from 608 units to 14,999 vehicles year-on-year.
Hyundai’s optimism is further fueled by the potential for profitability in the second quarter of 2025, buoyed by early demand for the ELEXIO. Positioned as a counterpart to the popular IONIQ 5, the ELEXIO boasts striking features, including crystal cube LED headlights and a full-length light bar.
Based on the E-GMP platform, it offers an impressive driving range of up to 700 km (approximately 435 miles) according to the CLTC cycle.
With the introduction of the ELEXIO, Hyundai aims to transition from being a traditional fuel vehicle titan to a leader in electrification within China, a crucial pivot as competition in the global EV landscape intensifies.
Company executives have expressed confidence that the ELEXIO will not only enhance Hyundai’s market share in China but could also pave the way for future expansions into Europe and the U.S., depending on its reception. Automotive enthusiasts and potential customers alike are encouraged to stay tuned for more details as the launch date approaches.
