Every year, cinema has unexpected surprises that somehow save a box office that seems doomed to oblivion. Last year, the phenomenon Barbenheimer (Barbie and Oppenheimer, released on the same day) was what boosted the box office to the maximum. And this time, for now, we owe it all to Inside Out 2.
The sequel to Pete Docter’s film was expected to be a success, but what it has achieved in its first weekend of release in the United States is practically unheard of. With a first box office of 295 million dollars, it has managed, for now, to be the biggest release of 2024 and, mind you, the biggest release in the history of an animated film. Not only from Pixar. Neither Super Mario Bros nor Shrek nor any other film you can think of has achieved these numbers before.
An unprecedented premiere
The truth is that, beyond this great premiere, the movie still has a long way to go. It has not yet been released in major box offices like China or Spain, and it is most likely to far exceed the $1 billion barrier. Thanks to Inside Out 2, a year as disastrous in the cinema as 2024 was, can finally be balanced.
