Netflix’s Maelstrom has made a big casting switch. Keanu Reeves is now set to star, taking over a project that had previously been linked to Alan Ritchson.
There’s still no official explanation for Ritchson’s departure, and nobody involved is saying much. Netflix hasn’t commented, Reeves’ reps haven’t commented, and Ritchson’s team hasn’t commented either.
Reeves will play the lead in the one-night survival thriller: a U.S. Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of a notorious arms dealer who’s in witness protection. Then a hurricane knocks out communications, the dealer’s henchmen start closing in, and the whole setup starts to sound very much like the kind of pressure-cooker action Reeves does well.
For anyone who keeps an eye on Netflix action releases, this one has a lot going on behind the scenes. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing after Carry-On. Mark Bianculli revised Greg Fitzpatrick’s spec script, which was first sold to Warner Bros. back in 1993. Jeff Robinov is producing, and there’s a nice full-circle detail there, since he was the agent on that original sale. Reeves also has a busy lineup beyond Maelstrom, with Shiver, The Entertainment System Is Down, and a possible remake of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil all on his slate.
When Maelstrom arrives, it’ll stream on Netflix.
