Lanterns season 2 is still unconfirmed: DC won’t auto-renew the HBO hit
HBO and DC Studios still haven’t renewed Lanterns for season 2, even after the series came out of the gate strong.
Peter Safran said those numbers shouldn’t be treated as an automatic green light. Lanterns drew 9.3 million viewers in its first three days, hit 10.5 million for the finale, and has averaged 19.3 million worldwide, which puts it among HBO’s five biggest launches. Even with that, Safran said HBO, DC Studios, Chris Mundy, and the rest of the team still need a “worthy successor.” A decision is expected by the end of 2026, while writers are already tossing around ideas.
If you’ve been following the DCU, the lack of a renewal does stand out. Critics were into the darker True Detective and Watchmen-style tone, and Kyle Chandler’s take on Hal Jordan landed well too. Fans were more divided, especially on the cosmic scope and Hal Jordan’s story, and the show currently sits at a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Safran also says TV is still a big part of DC Studios’ plans because it gives these characters more room and helps set up film crossovers, including Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart in next summer’s Man of Tomorrow.
Lanterns is streaming on HBO Max. Other DCU TV projects include The People v. Gorilla Grodd, which is already in production, along with Paradise Lost, Waller, and a reworked Booster Gold, all in development. The lineup also includes Creature Commandos season 2, Mister Miracle, My Adventures with Green Lantern, Starfire, DC Super Powers, and Joker: Laugh Riot. Mister Miracle also has Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis attached.
