Golden Axe smells like an arcade, like a 25-peseta coin, like “Continue?”, like a classic video game. After all, it’s been one of the best beat-’em-ups ever since it came out in 1989, and although Sega has wanted to revive the franchise as much as it could (the last attempt was in 2008, for PS3 and Xbox 360, and it failed), only now has it tried to turn it into something more than a video game. And now, finally, it looks incredible.
Hacking your way through life
That said, if you were expecting an epic adaptation of Golden Axe, you’re in for an absolute disappointment, because the Comedy Central series is pure meta comedy that’ll take the piss out of medieval fantasy adventures. It’s not fooling anyone, of course: its creators are Mike McMahan (Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad), and you knew it’d be funny from the start.
The series will premiere on September 16 on Paramount+ (in Spain probably SkyShowTime) and, beyond the jokes, it’ll also have its epic moments in a mix that, I’m not going to lie to you, looks strange in the trailer but somehow works. The question is… Is there really an audience for a Golden Axe adaptation, or are they counting on the spoof making us watch it?
If the series works, I’m sure Sega will come out with another sequel in the series as soon as possible, this time adding humor to the epicness that’s the house style. Taking an axe to your expectations.
