Tesla is making significant strides toward entering the European electric truck market, appointing Usuf Schermo as the new Head of Business Development for the Tesla Semi in the EMEA region.
This strategic move comes as Tesla gears up for mass production of the Tesla Semi in the United States, which is anticipated to commence in late 2025 with a projected output of 50,000 trucks per year.
However, the company faces several challenges as it seeks to expand into Europe, a market that is already bolstered by strong competition from established manufacturers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.
Will Tesla’s Entry into the Electric Truck Market Diversify Sales in Europe?
By the time the Tesla Semi becomes available in Europe, it is expected to encounter a landscape where rivals like Volvo and its FH Electric model are already excelling.
Tesla’s entry into this market has been particularly hindered by production delays, meaning that an authenticated version of the Tesla Semi won’t be available until 2026 at the earliest. This is particularly concerning given the robust development of the electric commercial truck market in Europe, which has seen over 3,000 electric trucks already in operation.
Schermo, who previously worked in sales for Volta Trucks and helped lead sales at EVUM aCar, will play a crucial role in establishing Tesla Semi’s presence in a rapidly evolving market. While the Tesla Semi has been seen as a promising entry due to its anticipated long-range capabilities, it also faces the drawback of rising costs, which are expected to be significantly higher than Tesla’s initial projections.
This push toward European sales could also serve to enhance the utilization of Gigafactory Berlin, where production exclusively centers on the Model Y. As Tesla navigates the challenges of a declining sales trend in Europe, introducing a commercial vehicle like the Tesla Semi could provide much-needed diversification and stability.
