A new report from the BlueGreen Alliance warns that the recently proposed Republican budget bill could jeopardize up to 2 million jobs nationwide, raising serious concerns about the future of domestic manufacturing in the United States.
This legislation, which aims to cut credits for manufacturing, threatens to reverse the progress made under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, both of which have propelled significant investments in green technology and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.
Over the past few years, U.S. manufacturing has seen rejuvenation, fueled by $210 billion in investments that created approximately 230,000 direct jobs in the EV sector alone.
California Faces Largest Risk with 329,000 Jobs at Stake Under New Legislation
States like Nevada, New Mexico, and Georgia experienced growth rates in manufacturing jobs of over 10%. However, the new budget bill threatens not only these direct jobs but also nearly 300,000 additional manufacturing roles, with projections indicating a loss of over 1 million indirect and induced jobs that support local economies.
California stands to be the hardest hit, with an estimated 329,000 jobs at risk. Neighboring states such as Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, part of the emerging U.S. “battery belt,” could lose significant employment as well—258,000, 140,000, and 135,000 jobs respectively.
The proposed cuts also include the elimination of tax credits for rooftop solar installations, which could raise the cost of such investments by approximately $10,000.
As the legislation moves to the Senate for further consideration, citizens are encouraged to communicate their opposition to policies that may shift U.S. manufacturing jobs overseas. The economic ramifications of these cuts could lead to widespread job losses, diminishing the manufacturing renaissance that has been celebrated in recent years.
