PS5 emulation speeds up: three projects now boot games

Three PC PlayStation 5 emulators, SharpEmu, KytyPS5, and RPCSX, have hit a new milestone for PS5 emulation. Based on updates shared on their community pages, they can now boot Sony’s PlayStation 5 system software and, in some cases, commercial games.

The projects are at different stages, which shows in the results so far. SharpEmu has run Dreaming Sarah and has brought Demon’s Souls and Astro Bot to their startup screens. KytyPS5 has reached Grand Theft Auto V’s menu, along with in-game states in Quake 2 and Pac-Man World. RPCSX, the PS5 project tied to RPCS3, can boot PS5 safe mode and run test samples.

Progress looks faster here than it did with PlayStation 3 emulation, and part of that comes down to the hardware. The PlayStation 5’s x86 design is much closer to a modern PC than the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor, so in some areas these emulators can work more like translation layers.

For people who think about preservation, ownership, and long-term access, this is worth watching. Sony plans to move new PlayStation titles away from physical discs starting in January 2028, while digital already accounted for 85% of software sales in the quarter ending March 31, 2026, according to Sony, compared with under 10% at the PlayStation 4 launch. Broad compatibility is still a long way off, but the shift matters, especially with critics already warning about pricing, availability, and licenses that can expire.

You can keep up with SharpEmu, KytyPS5, and RPCSX through their community pages. Just don’t mistake them for ready-to-use downloads yet. They’re still early builds, not something meant for everyday play.
