Those of us who think JK Rowling is finished and Harry Potter is facing a massive public backlash are delulu. That’s how it is. It’s okay, let’s face it: ordinary people couldn’t care less that their money is going to fund harm to trans people, as long as in return they get a new wand and an unexpected cameo in the HBO series. That’s why this news, which should be met with a weary sigh, has been received with thunderous applause by the “Wizarding World”. It is what it is.
Harry Potter and returns to the stage
Rupert Grint, who’s been the least successful of the original trio (despite his appearances in Knock at the Cabin and Servant), will return to Harry Potter… And on top of that, playing Ron Weasley once again! It won’t be, of course, in the HBO series, hilarious as that would’ve been, but in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the official sequel that has been running since 2016.
It’s been 15 years since his last appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, and Grint has decided that, despite his open criticism of Rowling, it’s time to return to the wizarding world, from February 2 to May 30, 2027. So, if you’re interested in seeing him, you need to start getting tickets now. Obviously, he’ll be playing an older Ron, who has a very minor role in the play, but he’s sure to get an ovation like he hasn’t had in a long time.
Grint is taking over from Tom Felton, who returned to Broadway to play Draco Malfoy and whose appearance sent ticket sales soaring. That was the draw: plain and simple nostalgia. “Ron Weasley has been part of me since I was 11 and I’m excited to be with him again at this point in life. There’s something special about being Ron again now that we’re both parents; it feels very familiar and completely new”. Well, what can you say.
