Star Wars Outlaws is now free to try on PS5: up to 3 hours of gameplay

Ubisoft has released a free Star Wars Outlaws demo on PS5. It offers up to three hours of play, Ubisoft says, but this isn’t the full game.

The demo lets you spend time in a section of Tatooine, with some main story material and side activities mixed in. It should be enough to get a sense of how the game handles stealth, blaster fights, speeder travel, and open-world exploration. And despite a few posts floating around online, Ubisoft isn’t giving away the entire game here. This looks like a regular demo, not some short-lived free giveaway.

If you’ve been interested but didn’t want to pay full price without trying it first, this is an easy one to check out. You’d be sampling a game Ubisoft launched on August 30, 2024, with Gold Edition, Ultimate Edition, and Ubisoft+ players getting in earlier on August 27. Ubisoft says the story follows Kay Vess and Nix in the gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, moving across Tatooine, Kijimi, and Akiva while they deal with criminal syndicates and chase a big score.

It’s also fair to go in knowing the response was mixed. You’ve probably seen the generally positive reviews, along with complaints about bugs, technical issues, and an overall lack of polish. Ubisoft said in October 2024 that sales came in below expectations, even while the company kept backing Star Wars Outlaws with updates and the Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune story expansions.

The demo is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect, according to Ubisoft.
