The HBO series The Last of Us has reaffirmed its position as a pillar in video game adaptations to film and television, generating high expectations among fans after the conclusion of its second season. With Ellie’s journey now complete, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Abby’s story, although they will need to prepare for a long wait. According to Casey Bloys, head of content at HBO Max, the third season is scheduled to premiere in 2027, with filming starting in 2026.
A third season, or perhaps two more seasons
This announcement comes in the context of significant changes, as Neil Druckmann, a key figure in the first two seasons and co-creator of the original game, has decided to leave his position at HBO to focus on his work at Naughty Dog. Despite his departure, Bloys expressed confidence in Craig Mazin, the writer and showrunner of the series, assuring that Druckmann left a solid plan for the future of the adaptation.
Mazin, who has been instrumental in shaping the narrative of the series, is considering whether the story will unfold over one or two additional seasons. Although the possibility of a total of four seasons had been previously mentioned, the final decision on the length of the series is still pending. “The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig Mazin is still to decide whether it will be two more seasons or one long one. It is not yet divided,” Bloys explained.
With Druckmann’s legacy in the background and Mazin’s sustained direction, the future of The Last of Us promises to deliver an exciting development that will captivate viewers. The blend of human drama and post-apocalyptic tension will continue to challenge expectations of what a video game adaptation can achieve.
