Does Airbnb care about user privacy? This is their new policy

Airbnb has announced a significant update to its privacy policy, which will take effect on April 30, prohibiting the use of indoor security cameras by hosts.

The new measure seeks to prioritize the privacy of tenants and responds to several incidents where guests discovered hidden cameras in their accommodations. Previously, Airbnb allowed the installation of cameras in common areas as long as guests were informed and they were placed in plain sight, except in bedrooms and bathrooms.

With the new policy, indoor cameras are completely prohibited, while outdoor cameras are subject to stricter regulations. Hosts must disclose the presence and location of any outdoor camera before guests make a reservation. Additionally, these cameras cannot monitor indoor spaces or private outdoor areas such as showers or saunas.

The update also addresses the use of decibel monitors to detect parties, which Airbnb banned in 2022. Hosts must disclose these devices in their listings. Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, confirmed to The Verge that the changes have been made after consulting guests, hosts, and privacy experts, and that the company will continue to gather feedback to adjust its policies to the needs of its global community.

Hosts have until the end of April to remove indoor security cameras. If an indoor camera is reported after the deadline, Airbnb will investigate and may take action, such as removing the listing or even the host’s account.

Airbnb will finally show the real price

If you are looking for a place to stay on Airbnb it usually means you are in a good mood as you are planning a vacation or trip. Unfortunately, however, there has been a longstanding issue with the app that has quickly turned those happy feelings sour for many Airbnb users and that is the Airbnb pricing system. For too long users have been clicking on a listing, thinking it falls within their budgets, falling in love with the property, and then having to turn away disappointed as Airbnb has added all the various service and cleaning charges on top of the listed price. Well now, it looks like that is about to change and Airbnb is going to start listing the full price of listings.

Airbnb has announced in a blog post that is introducing an update that will ensure users can see the total price of a listing when they are searching for a property on a map, browsing through search results, using price filters, and perusing a listing. As well as this, the company is also rolling out an update to the guest checkout page.

The update to the guest checkout page is needed because there will still be a single element of the price that won’t show up until the user heads to the checkout page and that is taxes. Although the new total price update will show a much more complete figure than it has until now, it still will not show the taxes they will have to pay, which will only come up at the end of the checkout process. According to the blog post, the update will rollout as soon as December:

“Starting in December, we will begin rolling out the option to display total price in countries without existing price display requirements. Total price will include all fees before taxes and be shown in search results, as well as on the map, filter, and listing page. Before confirming their booking, guests can still view a full price breakdown that shows Airbnb’s service fee, discounts, and taxes.”

This is a positive move from Airbnb, which will no doubt remove a lot of frustration from the booking process users have to go through on the app.

In other Airbnb news, did you know that the company is currently testing and rolling out anti-party technology?

Airbnb is about to start testing anti-party technology

Airbnb has evolved its offerings over the year with many professionals renting out their properties on the platform to either supplement their income or be all-out businesses. This move into more corporate offerings has seen an uptick in a variety of problems, however, with people caring less about the properties they are staying in, even when they are a normal person’s home. One such problem has been the breakout of Airbnbs being rented out to host massive parties, which themselves bring with them a whole host of particular problems. Airbnb moved to ban these types of rentals in 2019 and now looks set to implement ways of enforcing the ban.

Back in 2019, five people were killed in a fatal shooting that took place during a party at an Airbnb in California. Since then, the company has banned parties from taking place at Airbnb rentals and is now trialing anti-party technology in a bid to stop them from happening altogether.

The anti-party technology is not something that is installed at properties and blocks parties when they are detected. Instead, the technology, which is ready for testing in the US and Canada, will assess reservation requests against a series of factors and block the reservation from going through if it is suspicious. Furthermore, that user will then be unable to book a whole property and instead only have the option to book a private room. In the blog post announcing the move, Airbnb described the new anti-party technology like this:

“This system looks at factors like history of positive reviews (or lack of positive reviews), length of time the guest has been on Airbnb, length of the trip, distance to the listing, weekend vs. weekday, among many others. The primary objective is attempting to reduce the ability of bad actors to throw unauthorized parties which negatively impact our Hosts, neighbors, and the communities we serve.”

Airbnb recognizes that the new system won’t be perfect but it is a clear effort from the company to reduce problematic bookings. It remains to be seen just how successful it will be. In other recent Airbnb news, bookings have once again reached record levels as people are traveling more now that the lockdown confinements are over.

Airbnb reports that bookings are hitting record highs as travel returns

Are you worried that the economy is slowing down or about the high prices hitting households lately? Airbnb, a lodging website, has revealed that its bookings are higher than it ever was before, thanks to people being able to travel once again. However, that’s not the case in all countries, especially where severe lockdown restrictions are still a reality.

Between April and June this year, Airbnb bookings have reached 104 million orders. For the most part, the shift to remote working seems to be the biggest reason for long-night stays. While there has been a reduction in city travel in the past, that also appears to be recovering. This is only the case in places where lockdown restrictions have been lifted.

With China going into a stronger lockdown mode, Airbnb has to stop providing lodging in the country. The demand was too low, especially with everyone being forced to stay at home. In Europe and the U.S., it looks like travel is picking up again, which is why the company isn’t too concerned about the economy failing.

Since Airbnb started when the pandemic was at its highest, the team is glad to see travel becoming popular again. The weaker pound means fewer people in Europe countries reserving lodges, but it’s seeing more people from around the world travel to Euro locations.

Brian Chesky, the chief executive of Airbnb, addressed analysts in a conference call to supply these details. The company will now focus on increasing shares in businesses, hoping to boost its portfolio. We look forward to seeing its plans for the year ahead.
