On January 17th, Call of Duty will release a major mid-season update on all platforms. The Season 1 Reloaded will include a large amount of new content in both Call of Duty: Warzone and the multiplayer and Zombies modes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

First of all, in multiplayer there will be a new 6v6 map called Río. This medium-sized battlefield features a shopping center surrounded by a main street, a tram station, a market, a square, a café, and residential areas. Also, new multiplayer modes called Team Deathmatch, Infected, and Headquarters will be added.

The ranked multiplayer mode will allow players to compete in 4v4 matches with the same settings, maps, and modes as the Call of Duty League. There will also be a crossover with The Boys series, which will include a limited-time mode called Confirmed Kill with power-ups, as well as an event challenge called Supe Siege, which allows players to unlock a special LMG weapon blueprint.

In Warzone, the public event Gulag Night Vision will allow players to fight in the dark, while in battle royale a new Weapon Box objective will be introduced.

“At the beginning of each match, a weapon box appears in a small search area. Once found, the player who has it in their hands will be marked for all the enemies in the match“, explains Activision. “If a player who has the briefcase manages to stay alive until the end of the match or their squad leaves the match using a helicopter called purchasing a Covert Exfiltration, he and his teammates will win exclusive rewards”.

The Covert Exfiltration is a new victory condition that will allow players to call in a helicopter at a high price to have the opportunity to leave the game early. In addition, Champion’s Quest will also make its debut in Urzikstan, challenging squads to win 30 matches in a season or five consecutive matches to “trigger a devastating endgame”.

Finally, players in the Zombies mode of Modern Warfare III will be able to obtain valuable loot by defeating the new warlord Dokkaebi, born in South Korea.

One thing has to be acknowledged, and that’s that The Game Awards 2023 didn’t leave practically anyone indifferent. This year’s award ceremony, hosted by Geoff “Doritos” Keighley, was particularly notable due to the short time given to the winners to express their gratitude, to the extent that they were cut off in the middle of their speeches.

However, the event also had entertaining moments for the viewers. Following his lengthy speech last year upon receiving the award for best actor for his role as Kratos in God of War Ragnarok, Christopher Judge returned to The Game Awards this year, but this time as the presenter of the same award he had won a year earlier.

Obviously, the gala’s writers didn’t want to miss the chance for the actor playing Kratos to mention his “TED talk” from last year (which helped win several of the Steam Decks raffled off): “Alright, alright, I got it. I got it. I’m not going to stand here giving lengthy speeches. I’ll stick to the script. No eight-minute speeches like last year.”

But the phrase didn’t stop there, as the actor took the opportunity to deliver a “mini-roast” of a well-known game series among players: “But here’s a fun fact: my speech was actually longer than this year’s Call of Duty campaign.” After the numerous laughs from the audience, the presenter concluded by saying, “another company I’ll never work for.”

However, while practically no one saw even a hint of malice or ill will in Judge’s words, the joke at The Game Awards didn’t sit well with several developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, whose campaign received numerous criticisms for being, among other things, very short.

“It’s funny,” said Ajinkya Limaye, a former employee of Infinity Ward, on Twitter. “But yeah, the metrics in which CoD absolutely destroys all the God of War games (probably combined, to be honest) are equally laughable (if not more).”

Limaye ended up deleting the tweet but later posted another clarifying the reasons behind his comment: “I deleted the tweet because it was drawing unnecessary attention and was meant to be an indirect response to a joke that I found quite harsh to hear given the circumstances of development. I didn’t convey it well, so I apologize for that. Obviously, it’s not out of hatred for GoW. Peace ✌️.”

Another developer from the series, who also deleted their post after receiving insults and threats from some users, joined in to comment on the difficulties the studio has faced: “Honestly, as developers of Call of Duty, we’ve heard much worse. But I completely stand by it. Chronic overwork, brutal deadlines, and ruthless layoffs that absolutely proliferate in our industry, all in the name of profit-making without regard for the human cost, it’s an absolute damn shame.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has set the record for the highest player engagement in the entire ‘rebooted’ trilogy, even surpassing its two predecessors in some other parameters. These initial performance data about the video game, coming from Activision itself, arrive just a few weeks after Modern Warfare 3 was released to the market, receiving negative reviews everywhere.

The shooter’s poor reception stems from a campaign that, aside from being exceptionally short and riddled with bugs, presents a dull and incoherent plot. Despite Call of Duty historically focusing on multiplayer, these complaints were significant enough to make Modern Warfare III the lowest-rated title in the series’ history.

Nevertheless, Activision just revealed that their latest game helped the new Modern Warfare trilogy achieve substantial player engagement numbers in terms of average hours per player during its first two weeks on the market. The publisher also highlighted that the game’s single-player campaign amassed more gameplay hours than its two predecessors.

The way the statement is framed could suggest that Black Ops Cold War and/or Vanguard might have surpassed the campaign mode of Modern Warfare III in this aspect. It’s likely that Activision wouldn’t miss the chance to declare the game having the most popular story mode in the franchise’s last five years.

However, Activision hasn’t yet revealed any sales figures, so one could read between the lines that despite selling well, Modern Warfare III hasn’t outperformed its predecessors in the same time frame. No matter how much we can fondly remember an old canine friend, it takes something more for players to buy into your game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has been a highly publicized release for Activision Blizzard, but not for the reasons the company would like. While millions of users are currently playing it, the recent release from Sledgehammer Games has been a complete and resounding disappointment for both gaming journalists and players alike.

As we explained previously, shortly after the release of Modern Warfare III, social media was ablaze with very harsh criticism of the video game. To begin with, there were players who reported that their PS5 was asking for the Modern Warfare II disc, something that bothered (and surprised) many players and added to the fact that, initially, the trophy list itself appeared as DLC for MWII.

This practically confirmed the widely rumored idea that Modern Warfare III was initially conceived as DLC for MWII, later extending the development to create a full game (something that also happened with the recent Like a Dragon Gaiden, albeit with better results). But that’s not all.

After being sold on the idea that the Modern Warfare III campaign would offer more freedom and an open world, both media outlets and users agree that it’s not exciting at all. They find the plot uninteresting, lasting only about three hours, and, on top of that, riddled with bugs. This is somewhat “understandable” considering Activision only granted the studio 6 months to develop the campaign.

Adding to all this, the multiplayer barely saw any innovation (a huge surprise indeed), resulting in a rather catastrophic outcome: Modern Warfare III is the lowest-rated video game in Call of Duty history, scoring a 53 out of 100 on the Metacritic website, “surpassing” Call of Duty: Vanguard, which currently holds a 73 out of 100.

With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision, it’s unclear whether these results will mark a turning point in the development of a series that has been stretching itself for too many years. And no, I don’t think the presence of an old canine friend in Modern Warfare III will improve the bad image the company has gained solely from this installment.
