Whoops: Game of Thrones finale features plastic water bottle

See yet another goof from the production team.

After catching all sorts of hell for letting a Starbucks cup invade an episode this season, “Game of Thrones” botched things yet again in the series finale.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that Samwell Tarly snuck a plastic water bottle into Westeros.

Every Fortnite finale event from every season

Fortnite keeps raising the bars for season finales. See how far they’ve come.

Fortnite has made a name for itself in the Battle Royale world by capping its seasons with large-scale, dramatic finale events. From a meteor strike all the way to a devastating volcanic eruption, we’re recapping all of these spectacular events so far.

All Fortnite finale events so far

Season 3: Meteor Strikes

The Leadup: Players who have been around since Season 3 will doubtless remember the infamous “Meteor Conspiracy.” In the leadup to the end of Season 3, players began to notice a glowing object in the skies above the island. Soon after, camps with telescopes and other sky-watching equipment began to appear around the map. Players that aimed a scoped weapon at the unidentified object were also able to hear a strange pulsing noise. Telescope camps continued to appear around the map, and players began to speculate that the incoming meteor would wipe out the newly added Tilted Towers.

The Event:

In the weeks before the Finale, small meteorites began to hit areas all around the map, specifically the areas around Tilted Towers and Dusty Depot. The meteorites would cause damage to buildings, trees, and even players if hit.

Finally, the finale proper occurred, though offscreen: the big daddy meteor itself hit Dusty Depot head-on, decimating the buildings there and turning it into the crater now known as Dusty Divot. Smaller chunks of the meteor broke off and took out other locations around the map, which created a huge shift in the landscape for Season 4. Though certainly not as ambitious in scope as some of Fortnite’s other finales, this meteor strike was the first time a game-changing event like this had been seen in the world of Fortnite.

Season 4: Missile Launch

The Leadup: Arguably the king of all Fortnite finales, Season 4’s missile launch was the culmination of the season’s heroes vs. villains theme. Appearing in the villain lair location near Snobby Shores, construction on the rocket occurred continuously throughout the season. Soon enough, an ominous siren could be heard emanating from the lair, and computers inside the base began displaying a countdown.

The Event:

As the countdown ended, the missile rocketed skyward from its silo. At first, Tilted Towers once again seemed doomed, as the missile’s trajectory seemed to be pointing directly at the city.

In a shocking twist, however, a mysterious portal opened at the last second and sent the missile careening off course before detonating and opening a massive glowing rift in the sky above the island. These events set the stage for Season 5’s time-travel theme, and kicked off Fortnite’s tradition of live finale events in absolutely spectacular fashion.

Season 5: The Cube

The Leadup: As Season 5 drew to a close, some wild weather rolled in across the Fortnite map. Namely, lightning bolts began to strike seemingly random areas around the map. Eventually, the strikes increased in frequency before finally centralizing on a lonely mesa in the Paradise Palms desert region. As the strikes pummeled the plateau, The Cube finally appeared.

This giant purple monolith seemingly had a mind of its own, rolling across the map and imprinting certain areas with glowing glyphs as it went. Dubbed “Kevin” by the game’s fanbase, the Cube’s path meandered all over the map before finally making a beeline toward Loot Lake.

The Event:

As the Cube ended its journey, it rolled out onto the surface of the Lake itself before melting like a glowing scoop of purple ice-cream, covering the Lake’s surface in an ethereal covering. Players were delighted to find that this covering, like the Cube itself, was bouncy. Essentially, Loot Lake had become a giant jump pad for a short time. Unbeknownst to players, however, the Cube wasn’t done yet…

Season 6: The Portal

The Leadup:

Turns out, the Cube hadn’t melted at all. It submerged beneath the surface of the Lake and headed skyward, taking the Lake’s central island with it and leaving a swirling purple whirlpool behind. Kevin and the now floating island continued to travel around the map as Season 6 rolled on, activating sinister energy portals at the locations where it had previously left glyphs. After activating each portal, the stage was set, and Kevin returned to the Lake to unleash hell on the Battle Royale map.

The Event:

Kevin’s journey finally culminated in the Halloween-themed Fortnitemares event, which had players battling hordes of ghouls all across the map to earn some spooky rewards. All the while, Kevin’s island continued to float above the surface of Loot Lake, which had now almost entirely split apart into gigantic chunks.

As the event came to an end, so did Kevin. The Cube’s purple surface began to crack and then finally exploded in a huge burst of energy, transporting players into an alternate dimension that seemed to have something to do with the rifts from Season 5. After chasing down a floating energy butterfly, players were returned to a much more peaceful Battle Royale island. Kevin was no more, and in his place stood a tranquil meadow over the remnants of Loot Lake.

Season 7: The Ice Storm/Earthquakes

The Leadup: Season 7 got off to a chilly start. While Kevin the Cube was wreaking havoc across the map, some eagle-eyed players spotted a glacier looming off the island’s southern coast. After Season 6 wrapped up, that glacier slammed into the coast of the island, bringing with it a huge new snow biome and several new areas. Chief among them was a giant castle known as Polar Peak. As the season progressed, more areas of the castle were revealed as the ice encasing them melted. Turns out that the castle’s owner wasn’t happy about the sudden thaw, however…

The Event:

A floating energy orb soon appeared above the castle’s courtyard, with a shadowy figure encased inside. In addition to the orb, there was a countdown, and when the numbers reached zero, the Ice King emerged from his slumber. Needless to say, he wasn’t pleased.

Taking form as a giant figure of snow and ice, Polar Peak’s lord blanketed the map in ice and snow… as well as hordes of ice creatures similar to those from the Fortnitemares event. For several days, players beat back the frozen hordes, and eventually, the ice thawed… but it soon became clear that the Ice King was using the ice to keep someone very powerful imprisoned. This someone was The Prisoner, who set off across the map to wreak havoc of his own.

Season 8: The Volcano

The Leadup: As The Prisoner shed his chains, he revealed his true form as The Fire King, a balance to his icy counterpart. He made his home in the midst of Wailing Woods, and brought about some massive changes to the map. As earthquakes shook the map, a gigantic fiery volcano emerged in the midst of the forest, which had now become a tangled jungle. Things seemed relatively peaceful for a while, until a black helicopter was spotted circling the outskirts of the map. This chopper bore the same insignias as the organization that had set up the Dusty Divot research facility in Season 4, and seemed to be searching for something. As it traveled across the map, dig sites began appearing in its wake, and meanwhile, black plumes of smoke began emanating from the mouth of the volcano.

The Event:

The chopper soon reached its final destination: Loot Lake. A huge excavation site soon appeared, and Loot Lake was no more. Instead, a futuristic-looking bunker of some sort was revealed at the center of the excavation. As several locks surrounding the bunker were opened, a timer appeared overhead, with the volcano’s smoke getting darker and thicker as it counted down. When the timer hit zero, a portal opened over the bunker, transporting players into an alternate dimension.

This dimension housed The Vault, which contained relics and items of seasons past. Together, players worked to free a particular item to return to the game: in this case, the Drum Gun made a triumphant return. Players were then teleported back to the world just in time to watch the volcano erupt, completely wiping out Tilted Towers and part of Retail Row. This set the stage for Season 9, which is set several years in the future and showcases cyberpunk cities built over the volcanic wreckage.

There are no hints yet as to how Season 9 will come to a close, but if Fortnite’s previous finales are any indication, it’ll be spectacular.

Tilted Towers destroyed in Fortnite Season 8 Finale

Fortnite closes out Season 8 with an explosive finale.

Fortnite Lava

Fortnite Season 8 ended with a literal bang this past week when the Battle Royale island’s newly formed volcano finally erupted. After being threatened with destruction for almost 4 seasons now, Tilted Towers was finally turned into a smoldering crater by the ensuing lava flow. Meanwhile, the mysterious Vault unearthed at Loot Lake was finally opened, which led to even more questions about the mysterious forces that have been at play throughout Fortnite’s loose plot. Read on for a recap of these game-changing events and see what could be in store for Season 9.

Tilted Towers destroyed in Fortnite Season 8 Finale

For those who haven’t been following along, the Fortnite island’s volcano has been threatening to erupt for some time now. Plumes of ominous black smoke were spotted emanating from the volcano several weeks ago, and the smoke became thicker and darker as the finale approached. Simultaneously, the mysterious organization that built the research facility at Dusty Divot returned, conducting a massive excavation at Loot Lake.

The dig revealed an alien-looking, high tech vault that was unlocked via a series of spaceship-like keys. After all the locks were opened, a timer began counting down and the vault itself opened. Take a look at the entire sequence of events in the video below:

After the Vault opened, players stepped into a portal and were transported into an alternate dimension that looked very much like the one from the Season 6 finale. At the center of this strange dimension was a giant swirling energy orb, as well as six glass pillars each containing an item that had been previously removed from the game. Items included the X-4 Stormwing and the Jump Pad, and players worked together to destroy the case of the item they chose to unvault. Players overwhelmingly chose the Drum Gun, a cross between an Assault Rifle and SMG based on the iconic Tommy Gun.

After the Drum Gun’s pillar was destroyed, players were instantly teleported back to the Battle Royale island just in time to watch the volcano dramatically erupt. The resulting explosions launched molten lava rocks to several locations around the island: Retail Row, Polar Peak, and most notably, Tilted Towers. The island’s skies remained black with ash for some time after the eruption was finished.

Players that visit the eruption sites will find burned, blackened craters and pools of lava. In the case of Tilted Towers, most of the city’s iconic buildings have been totally destroyed and replaced with ruins, burnt-out car wreckage, and ravaged wasteland. Veteran players will know that this isn’t the first time Tilted has been threatened with destruction: it was rumored to be the site of Season 3’s meteor strike and was almost leveled during Season 4’s missile launch event.

As for the unvaulting event, it’s left us with more questions than answers. Though the alternate dimension is almost certainly related to Season 6’s finale event, we’re still no closer to discovering the true nature of this dimension, or the purpose of the government organization that discovered it. We’re hoping that Season 9 delves further into these questions, as this dimension and other cosmic forces have been teased since at least Season 4.

Though details on the upcoming Season 9 remain murky, our personal theory is some sort of post-apocalypse theme. Season 8’s Discovery challenges unlocked the Ruin skin, who is apparently some sort of demonic harbinger of doom and destruction. In addition, a post-apocalypse theme would fit nicely with the new wasteland areas and total destruction that just got rained down on much of the island.

There are still a few days left until Season 9 is unveiled, but until then, players can try their hand at Season 8’s Overtime Challenges. This extra challenge set allows players to unlock alternate versions of a few of Season 8’s Battle Pass skins. Players can also use this extra time to continue knocking out Season 8 challenges for a last-chance at the Tier 100 Luxe skin. The surprising favorite to rule at the end of Game of Thrones

The smart money says the final ruler won’t be Jon or Daenerys. Who is it?

Hound

The final season of “Game of Thrones” is approaching steadily and surely, like an army of White Walkers headed for the wall. Fan theories are running rampant about how it will all go down. The most recent trailer provides only a small glimpse of the battle to come. So we checked with an online betting site to reveal what people are actually willing to wager on.

Who will rule Westeros at the end of Season 8?

Bovada says this wager “will be settled based on the confirmed ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ of the Andals and the First Men. If there is no King or Queen, whoever rules or controls King’s Landing will be deemed the winner.” Here are the odds. (Remember, the higher the number, the less likely it is to happen.)

  • Bran Stark +300
  • Jon Snow +350
  • Daenerys Targaryen +500
  • Sansa Stark +600
  • Gendry +700
  • The Night King +1,000
  • Tyrion Lannister +1,000
  • Arya Stark +1,400
  • Jon and Daenerys’ Baby(!) +1,400
  • Petyr Baelish (even though he’s dead?!?) +1,400
  • Samwell Tarly +1,400
  • Cersei Lannister +2,500
  • Jaime Lannister +3,000
  • Varys +5,000
  • Davos Seaworth +6,600
  • Bronn +7,500
  • Breinne of Tarth +10,000
  • Euron Greyjoy +10,000
  • Gilly +10,000
  • Jaqen H’ghar +10,000
  • Jorah Mormont +10,000
  • Beric Dondarrion +12,500
  • Daario Naharis +12,500
  • Melisandre +12,500
  • The Hound +12,500
  • The Mountain +15,000
  • Theon Greyjoy +15,000
  • Tormund Giantsbane +15,000
  • Yara Greyjoy +15,000

These are some crazy odds. They give the Zombie Mountain the same chance as Theon at sitting on the Iron Throne? At least Theon can string a sentence together. Also, why does Littlefinger have any chance at this? His throat was slit in Season 7.

Why is Bran the favorite to rule?

It ties into the whole Three-Eyed Raven subplot. Remember, Bran has shown the ability to shout through time. His father Ned appeared to hear him when he spoke during the flashback to Jon Snow’s birth. Hodor obviously heard Meera shouting “hold the door” via Bran’s vision. But weirdly, Meera was shouting in the present and it somehow echoed back to Hodor as a child (then named Wylis).

And there’s the thought that the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, was shouting “Burn them all” because he was getting some sort of message from Bran in the future – perhaps Bran is screaming for everyone to burn the White Walkers and it somehow rippled back in time to Aerys, which led Jaime to stick a sword through his back.

Remember that Bran is named for his “relative,” Bran the Builder, who was responsible for building the wall in the first place. Is this Brandon Stark the same Brandon Stark from back then? Another possible time-travel clue: Sam finds the buried dragonglass at the Fist of the First Men. Maybe a time-traveling Bran left it there for them. Is this whole world just one big loop?

With all this said, the bet could be pointless. In the upcoming battle, anything could happen. In the aftermath, it’s possible the survivors may decide that kings are stupid, so they discard the idea of a monarchy altogether. Or maybe there’s some kind of truce with the White Walkers. The show could go a million different ways, and the person sitting on the throne could be the least interesting footnote of all of this.

But there is a bet that’s sure to matter…

Who will die first in Season 8?

Bovada’s odds paint a sad picture for the Iron Islands.

  • Euron Greyjoy +145
  • Yara Greyjoy +300
  • Theon Greyjoy +500
  • Cersei Lannister +650
  • Sansa Stark +1,000
  • Jaime Lannister +1,200
  • Daenerys Targaryen +3,300
  • Arya Stark +5,000
  • Tyrion Lannister +5,000
  • Jon Snow +10,000

Winter is coming, friends. The final season of “Game of Thrones” begins April 14.

Fortnitemares finale reveals alternate dimension

Clues to what the Cube’s explosion means for the future of Fortnite.

The Fortnitemares limited-time Halloween event ended in spectacular fashion this past Sunday with a one-time event in the same vein as the infamous missile launch that led into Season 5. Players in the game on Sunday witnessed as the Cube exploded in a flash of light and whisked players into an alternate dimension. If you weren’t in-game to witness the event for yourself, take a look at the footage below to see what happened.

It was a head-scratching series of events, but unfortunately, if you weren’t in-game to witness it for yourself, you’re out of luck. It’s in keeping with Fortnite’s trend of including show-stopping, one-time-only events in the multiplayer game, adding a level of story and shared experience for millions of players worldwide.

So, what exactly are we witnessing here? After unleashing hordes of monsters on the map and parking itself above the swirling portal at Leaky Lake, the Cube began to harden and develop a stone-like outer shell. Then, all at once, the Cube began to glow intensely, spinning faster and faster until finally exploding in a flash of bright white light.

The blast teleported players into an ethereal alternate dimension, populated by glowing, almost digital conduits and floating spheres of glowing light. It eventually became clear that this dimension was connected in some way to the Rifts that have been scattered around the map since Season 5. The points of light surrounding the players eventually coalesced into what seemed to be the familiar shape of one of these Rifts. In actuality, the light formed into an otherworldly butterfly.

After chasing down and catching the butterfly, players were treated to a short cutscene before being teleported back to the Battle Royale map, where it quickly became apparent that a few things had changed. The Cube and the remnants of the floating island that surrounded it were gone, and the hole in Leaky Lake had closed up. In its place were a series of peaceful-looking islands. Take a look at the map below to see the new layout:

Of note is the central island, marked by a Stonehenge-like rock formation in the exact spot of the rift left by the Cube. Are these perhaps the last remnants of the cube? Take a look at the new monuments in the Tweet below:

Speculation abounds as to what the event could signify for future seasons. It seems apparent that the Cube’s disappearance was related in some way to Season 5’s rifts and whatever opened them. Fortnite players have long speculated at the existence of a mysterious extraterrestrial being dubbed The Traveler; perhaps this was once again the handiwork of this benevolent, god-like entity?

What’s apparent for now is that the Cube Monsters are gone (at least for the time being), and that there’s still a few weeks left until the end of the spooky-themed Season 6. With more winter holidays right around there corner, there will doubtless be plenty of festive treats on the horizon. Fortnite has already announced new official NFL skins just in time for football season.

If you missed out on Fortnitemares, however, don’t worry. You can still battle the Cube Monsters in an upcoming LTM, dubbed Team Terror, that pits squads against hordes of the undead.
