Now that we’ve seen Lucia in action, thanks to the first official GTA 6 trailer, which has reached 100 million views in just a day and a half, we can say several things about the new protagonist.

And while it may not seem like much to you, if we pay attention to the details, we can uncover more than meets the eye. In Lucia, we have a mirror in which to see ourselves.

Lucía and Jason, the new outlaws of the 21st century

The trailer also revealed Lucia’s main relationship with a man named Jason in GTA 6. Previously, there had been rumors that Jason would be the second playable protagonist in the game, and that he and Lucia would be a modernized Bonnie and Clyde, going on a criminal spree through the streets of Leonida.

This was confirmed in several sequences of the trailer, where Lucia and Jason commit various robberies and get involved in a high-speed car chase, expected moments in a Grand Theft Auto title.

Lucia can be heard in a voice-over telling Jason that the only way for both of them to get out of the situation they’re in is by “staying together and being a team,” suggesting that she is the driving force in these criminal adventures, and any moral framework she employs largely revolves around trust.

Something has motivated them to return to a life of crime

However, the trailer doesn’t suggest what the “situation” is that pushes them back into a life of crime. It’s possible that the failed job that led to Lucia’s arrest before the GTA 6 story could have angered a member of an established criminal organization from one of the other titles based in Vice City, such as the Cubans, the Haitians, the Vercetti Crime Family, or even the Vice City Bikers, as bikers can be seen in the GTA 6 trailer images.

Therefore, Lucia and Jason might be trying to get enough money to settle their debts and escape from Leonida. Alternatively, the two could simply be trying to get enough money to leave the city and retire somewhere.

Previous rumors suggested that Lucia and Jason might already have a small child, which would be a first in the Grand Theft Auto series. This would undoubtedly give them a strong incentive to leave their past lives behind and raise their child away from their criminal activities after pulling off one last big job.

Unfortunately, if Rockstar decides to replicate the story of Bonnie and Clyde with Lucia and Jason in GTA 6, this adventure could be doomed to failure, as Bonnie and Clyde were real-life criminals who were fatally shot by FBI agents in an ambush in 1934.

While two of the endings in Grand Theft Auto 5 resulted in the death of one of its protagonists – Michael or Trevor – the canonical ending, Deathwish, saw all three protagonists survive. Therefore, it would be a first in the longstanding franchise if Rockstar were to give their two playable characters such a brutal ending in Grand Theft Auto 6.

An undeniable criminal past

The Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer begins with Lucia imprisoned in one of Leonida’s prisons. When a staff member asks her why she’s there, she casually shrugs, saying, “Bad luck, I guess,” suggesting she has a relaxed attitude toward crime, something typical of a Grand Theft Auto protagonist.

This sequence indicates that the GTA 6 storyline won’t focus on her first foray into crime and implies that she might return to her criminal exploits with her established connections and experience.

If that’s the case, GTA 6 might have an opening sequence similar to its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5, where a heist gone wrong is shown years before the main story of the game. While in that game, Michael De Santa struck a deal with the Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB) and moved to Los Santos, things could go very differently for Lucia, leading to her arrest.

Lucia also appears to wear an ankle monitor in the first promotional art of GTA 6, suggesting that her parole could have a significant impact on her story and movements, potentially being the reason she cannot leave Leonida.

Will GTA 6 be released on PC? We already know the answer from Rockstar

When asked to comment on the status of the PC version, Rockstar confirmed that all the information was in the press release.

One of the big questions about GTA 6 is whether Rockstar will pull a move similar to GTA 5 in 2013. That is, releasing the game first for consoles and a year later launching it for PC (and at that time, also for the new generation of consoles).

The first trailer for GTA 6 only tells us that Rockstar’s next open-world criminal adventure will arrive in 2025, without mentioning any platform. However, in a press release, Take-Two has announced that GTA 6 will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

But at Rockstar, they have their customs and the lucrative tradition of getting people to buy games twice, which is challenging to give up. Rockstar has undergone some high-level personnel changes in the last decade (even one of the Houser brothers left), but Rockstar remains Rockstar.

And if there’s a game that can get people to relent and buy a console version or grit their teeth for a year-long wait, it’s GTA. It’s one of the few single-player series that feels as massive as it did a decade ago. The trailer already has over 50 million views.

For over a year, we’ve been saying that Rockstar was going to bet on a female protagonist (it’s not the first time, as in one of the earlier installments, one of the playable characters was a woman) and that she was going to be Latina.

We even went a bit further, as leaks already mentioned that the protagonist would be named Lucia and that her relationship with the other protagonist (her lover/boyfriend/husband, we don’t know yet) would be in the style of Bonnie and Clyde, two of the most famous outlaws in North American history.

And it seems that’s how it’s going to be: lovers, confidants, partners, and criminals. The trailer gave us hints of a relationship that seems to be based on crime and love… just like Bonnie and Clyde.

And we’re back to Vice City, but better than ever

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in Vice City, a location previously explored in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City from 2002. Unlike its predecessor, GTA 6 offers what seems to be a modern take on the place inspired by Miami and goes further to encompass the state of Leonida.

Leonida, much like its real-world counterpart Florida, features beaches, wetlands, and other quintessential elements such as crocodile-filled swamps. Here are all the known locations in GTA 6 revealed by the game’s first trailer.

Otherwise, there would be no essential difference between the protagonist duo of GTA 6 and the protagonist trio of GTA 5, given the distinct and often separate narrative of the latter.

However, if the intention is to tell a combined story in which players can alternate between both characters, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that the main storyline of GTA 6 might include a cooperative mode.

And the entire setup would suggest that the two players could work together within the confines of a true cooperative mode. It wouldn’t be something whimsical or as vast as GTA Online, but each character would have to be significant, unlike GTA San Andreas.

Of course, these are just speculations, but GTA 6 could be the moment for Rockstar to make its mark in the world of traditional cooperative gameplay, just as it has done with its single-player games.

25 million copies on the same day of launch

GTA 6 is closer than ever, as Take-Two’s CEO recently hinted at a fiscal year 2025 release date.

The CEO predicts record profits, as we’ve seen before, including the possibility of raking in over $1 billion that first fiscal year. This can only be achieved by launching a strong GTA 6.

And that’s where the news jumps in, as a video game expert claimed this weekend that GTA 6 is likely to surpass 25 million sales at launch.

Joost Van Dreunen, an industry expert, noted in his monthly newsletter that sales estimates for GTA 6 are as high as 25 million units distributed in the same week of launch.

Compared to GTA 5, GTA 6 will launch with a smaller player base due to the fact that there are fewer PS5 and Xbox Series currently sold than their predecessors at the time. The PS5 has sold an estimated 38.4 million units and the Xbox Series is estimated to have passed the 20 million mark.

By comparison, the PS3 and Xbox 360 had sold around 160 million units at the time of GTA 5’s release. Still, 100 million players expected by the time GTA 6 comes out should be a decent base for Rockstar.

It remains to be seen if Rockstar will release the PC port at launch. Looking back, Rockstar are to release the PC port a few years later than its console release. We’ll see.
