A large Christmas tree is the new sensation in London thanks to Pokémon

If you’re a Pokémon fan, you can’t miss this under any circumstances. Starting this week, the North Atrium of the Westfield London shopping center hosts a Christmas tree made up of over 800 plush toys from the Pokémon Center located there. The tree, standing over 4 meters tall, can be viewed and photographed from November 23rd to December 4th.

Based on an artistic rendering of the tree found on the Pokémon website, the tree is composed of a wide range of Pokémon species, including Squirtle, Psyduck, Ditto, and Piplup. The tree is topped with a Pikachu dressed in a Christmas sweater.

Additionally, a QR code is displayed to visit the Pokémon Center website, where you can purchase all the plush toys, along with a series of other Christmas-themed Pokémon such as Pawmi, Sprigatito, and a wide variety of Pikachu versions. And if you’re a fan of Ash Ketchum’s faithful companion, pay attention, as you can also participate in a drawing for 12 giant plush toys of the charismatic electric mouse.

To enter the drawing, you’ll need to share a photo taken with the tree on Instagram, tag @PokemonNewsUK, and include the hashtag #pokemoncenteruk. If you can’t visit it in person, you can follow the same steps with ‘a photo of your favorite Pokémon plush in a winter scene‘ for a chance to win, although the plush toys will only be delivered to UK addresses.

The Pokémon Christmas events in Europe are not limited to the tree, as the Pokémon Company recently announced that Poké Post offices would be opening in selected cities in the UK, France, and Germany from now until December 19th

At these stations, visitors will receive a Pokémon Trading Card Game, as well as a pair of Pokémon Together promotional cards, one of which will be sent by mail to a friend. It also includes meet-and-greet opportunities and photo opportunities with Pikachu and Eevee. The list of upcoming locations and dates is as follows:

  • November 25th: Westfield La Part-Dieu, Lyon, France
  • Sábado 2 de diciembre: Plaza de La Défense, París, Francia
  • Saturday, December 2nd: La Défense Square, Paris, France
  • Saturday, December 9th: Mercedes Platz, Berlin, Germany

The Forbidden Pokémon: after 17 years, a creature will never be able to battle again

It has been used in battles for 17 years, but some players have complained that its hidden ability tilted fights in their favor and were unfair. It’s true?

Currently, there are over a thousand Pokémon, and only a few are in the select club of being unable to play in the competitive scene. Mewtwo, Deoxys, Blaziken, Aegislash, Dragonite, Mega Gengar, or, of course, Arceus, are just some of the creatures that, in a competitive match, would break the game too much in their favor. Today, another Pokémon joins this group, and if you’re a casual fan, it’s very possible that you’ve never even heard of it.

I don’t choose you

We’re talking about Gliscor, a Ground/Flying type Pokémon that was introduced in Diamond/Pearl, back in 2006. It’s the evolution of Gligar, which itself requires patience to obtain: it must level up at night while holding a Razor Fang. For 17 years, it’s been used in battles, but some players have complained that its hidden ability tilted fights unfairly in its favor. Is this true?

Yes and no. But mostly, yes. You see: in one-on-one battles (though most competitive battles are two-on-two), Gliscor often seals the deal. This wasn’t the case until Generation 5, when Hidden Abilities were introduced. Follow along, it gets a bit complex: this creature has the ability Poison Heal, meaning whenever it’s poisoned, it automatically heals itself.

The issue arises when you equip Gliscor with a Toxic Orb – usually used to poison a Pokémon and gradually reduce its health. However, with Gliscor, the opposite happens; it heals a sixth of its health after each turn. Essentially, it can use Toxic on its opponent and wait for them to faint while steadily recovering from incoming attacks.

This ban leads to more problems. Some argue that the Pokémon that should have been banned is Gholdengo, which when paired with Gliscor creates an almost unbeatable team. But that’s not all: creatures like Landorus-Therian, without the threat of Gliscor, can regain dominance in the competitive scene, creating another issue for the organization. Ash Ketchum never dealt with these kinds of situations, did he?

The absurd reason ‘Pokémon’ was banned in Saudi Arabia and other countries in 2001

The whole world fell in love with this saga. The whole world? That’s saying a lot.

When ‘Pokémon‘ set out to conquer the world in 1997 with the anime and the two Game Boy games in tow, it achieved it almost immediately: the end of the 90s was a pure global pokemania with video games, the collectible card game, trading cards, chewing gum, merchandise, anime, the Pokédex, and even a Pikachu that counted your steps. The whole world fell in love with this saga. The whole world? That’s a lot to say

Our world is different

Not everyone ended up in love with the game: there were quite a few parents who expressed concern and even accused it of being satanic, something that ‘South Park’ parodied in the wonderful 1999 episode ‘Chinpokomon.’ In Saudi Arabia, however, they went further: in 2001, they announced that the game was another form of gambling, prohibited in Islam, and banned the games, anime, collectible cards, and even, more recently, ‘Pokémon Go.’ Fixed ideas, indeed.”

It is not the only country that has banned everything about the franchise: Egypt and Qatar banned it because it ‘promoted Zionism’ (oh, no, Charmander, what have you done now), and Turkey stopped airing the anime after two seasons – in a twist of events – because a seven-year-old girl jumped from a fifth floor believing she was a Pokémon. Don’t worry, though; she only broke a leg. However, she will have to live her whole life knowing they will never find out if Ash Ketchum wins the league because of her idea.

Some were even convinced that ‘Pokémonwas a Jewish conspiracy. A word that, when translated, apparently meant ‘I am Jewish’ and promoted the theory of evolution instead of creationism. All very deep convictions (and very false), yes, but currently, the games are sold without any problem, as well as the merchandise, ignoring a prohibition that was always absurd.

In the end, the seasons were eventually dubbed… and censored. For example, all of Brock’s passionate interactions with women were changed to calm conversations, and entire episodes were altered to prevent characters like Gengar from appearing. Interestingly, before the ban in 2001, crossover musicals were produced with ‘Detective Conan,’ and even the American ‘Pokémon Live!‘ was performed in English with the American cast. It ended just a few days before the decree that banned the series forever. Go figure.

The Van Gogh Museum stops giving away Pikachu cards… trying to avoid violence

The fault lies, of course, with the adult fans of ‘Pokémon’, who have been seen creating a fuss at the entrance and on the tables where they keep the merchandising.

There is a video that sums up very well who we are in Spain and, in general, all over the world: the one in which, after the appearance of free umbrellas at Fitur, there is a rush of people wanting to get one and stepping on anyone they have to in order to do so. We sell out anyone just to get something for free, even more so if it’s a special and unique edition. And that’s what happened in Amsterdam, where they didn’t anticipate the current success of ‘Pokémon.

Get one, no matter the cost

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a must-visit spot. Honestly, one of the best places in the city for painting enthusiasts. The thing is, since September 28th, the museum teamed up with The Pokémon Company to organize various activities related to the franchise (such as educational events and treasure hunts) and to give away, as a token of appreciation, a Trading Card Game (TCG) card featuring Pikachu painted in the style of Van Gogh. I bet you can guess what happened next.

In just under a month, they announced from Amsterdam that there are no more cards. The fault, of course, lies with adult Pokémon fans, who were seen causing a ruckus at the entrance and at the tables where they keep the merchandise, to the point that the given reason for discontinuing this giveaway has been… the safety of the museum staff. Well done, gamers. We did it again.

Do you want the Pikachu Van Gogh card but missed out? Don’t worry: in the future, you’ll be able to get it by shelling out more than 30 dollars in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In theory, this new event will happen in January 2024, but until then, the card will remain securely locked away, while the museum staff recover from the shock of seeing people with a bit too much passion for their own good. And no, not for ‘The Sunflowers’, precisely.

Oh, and here’s an extra tidbit to dig into the depths of absurdity: the second-hand card already costs 100 dollars. Of course it does. Poor Vincent – he didn’t deserve this.
