The Witcher 3 announces its first new expansion in ten years

CD Projekt has unexpectedly announced a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Titled Songs of the Past, it will put us in the shoes of Geralt of Rivia, and it is being co-developed by Fool’s Theory, the team behind the RPG The Thaumaturge, and for now, we don’t know anything else except that we will learn more “by the end of summer.” A complete surprise, considering that the original game was released eleven years ago. An expansion for which we will have to wait. Although it seems we won’t have to wait long to know all the details about the expansion. CD Projekt has announced that they will broadcast […]

An expansion that will require waiting

Although it seems we won’t have to wait long to know all the details about the expansion. CD Projekt has announced that they will broadcast a special live event on Thursday, May 28 at five in the afternoon, Spanish mainland time. Although they haven’t specifically announced what they will talk about, they have said that the event will feature Kacper Niepokólczycki and Magdalena Zych, and that “we will return once again to the land of knights, vineyards, and vampires.”

There have been many rumors for months about this expansion. It is likely to be a way to link the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with those of the upcoming The Witcher 4, according to those same rumors, it seems that CD Projekt wants to start rekindling interest in the witcher among its fans.

Now, if you want to play Songs of the Past you should know that you have to stay up to date. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will be released in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. So if we were thinking of playing it on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, we’re afraid you’ll have to pay again to be able to play it. Because the world keeps moving forward. Even The Witcher’s.

The new Star Wars game and the one from the Call of Duty designer have something in common: a mysterious company funding them

Star Wars has a new RPG in the works. Although its release date is still a long way off, its announcement at the recent 2025 Games Awards caused a great stir. And it was for good reason. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a sequel to the beloved RPG saga Knights of the Old Republic, created by Bioware, which was a hit during the 2000s. At the same time, the creative designer of Call of Duty: Black Ops, David Vonderhaar, has opened a studio called BulletFarm where he will create a spiritual successor to the popular game in the franchise […]

Star Wars has a new RPG in the works. Although its release date is still a long way off, its announcement at the recent 2025 Game Awards caused quite a stir. And it was for good reason. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a sequel to the beloved RPG saga Knights of the Old Republic, created by Bioware, which was a huge success during the 2000s.

In turn, the creative designer of Call of Duty: Black Ops, David Vonderhaar, has opened a studio called BulletFarm where he aims to create a spiritual successor to the popular game from the Activision Blizzard franchise.

An unknown company, but less than it seems

What do these two games have in common? At first glance, nothing. We don’t know where the funding for either of them comes from. Until now. Because it has been discovered that the one financing the games of both studios is GreaterThanGroup, a business conglomerate previously unknown. But it is led by someone who is not unknown at all: Simon Zhu.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, that’s normal. Simon Zhu was the president of NetEase until he left the company in 2025. During this time, he has been working to raise capital through investors to create his own company, GreaterThanGroup, where he can work freely on developing the games he believes in.

It’s not that Zhu lacks experience precisely. He is behind recent successes like Marvel Rivals or Where Winds Meet, demonstrating that he has a good eye for spotting trends.

And starting with designers of beloved franchises like Star Wars and the designers of Black Ops shows that it not only aimsto target the Asian audience but also to conquer the Western audience. This is why, in the future, it is important to keep the name GreaterThanGroup in mind.

Atari acquires the rights to the RPG that has shaped all RPGs

Atari has acquired the rights to multiple iterations of the Wizardry franchise. Holding the licenses for Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds (1982), Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983), Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna (1987), and Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (1988), as well as “many other video games, rights, and other intellectual properties related to Wizardry.” This could well translate into new games for the franchise as well as series, movies, comics, or any other kind of productions. Atari has acquired the rights to multiple iterations of the Wizardry franchise. Holding the licenses for Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds (1982), Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983), Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna (1987) and Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (1988), as well as “many other video games, rights, and other intellectual properties related to Wizardry.”

This could well translate into new games in the franchise as well as series, movies, comics, or any other kind of productions.

Wizardry, one of the most influential video games in history

In fact, Atari is not new to the world of Wizardry. In 2024, they published a remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, developed by the studio Digital Eclipse, which updated the graphics and mechanics of the game to make it more accessible to new generations of players. Something very necessary given the difficulty and roughness of a game originally released in 1981 for the Apple II.

The importance of Wizardry cannot be overlooked in any case. The franchise is of great significance to video games, as it shaped what RPGs would become thereafter.

Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Baldur’s Gate are direct heirs of Wizardry, as their creators have explicitly stated more than once, but anime also has a clear heritage from this game, as its popularity was such that it has influenced numerous cultural productions outside of video games, including the pioneer of high fantasy in Japan: Record of Lodoss War.

On the other hand, it seems that things are not so clear. Drecom, the company behind the rights to Wizardry in Japan and which has been in a decades-long struggle for the rights with its original creator, Robert Woodhead, claims that Atari has not acquired the rights to Wizardry. Therefore, it seems that there will still be discussion about how all this will translate into the future of the franchise.

Known for their excellence in creating cinematics, Blizzard’s work has set a benchmark in the industry for decades, as evidenced by the acclaim of the cinematics from titles like Diablo and World of Warcraft.

Animation Specialists

Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza series, is developing Fable, a role-playing game expected to be released in the fall of 2026. Although the team is famous for its racing titles, they now face the challenge of working on an RPG, a task they must master while receiving artistic support from Blizzard.

This partnership not only promises to enhance the visual quality of Fable, but also generates strong excitement in the gaming community, who eagerly await the results of this collaboration.

In addition to Blizzard, other collaborations between Xbox studios are underway. The Coalition, known for its work with Unreal Engine, is supporting studios like inXile, while Compulsion Games is using motion capture technology from Activision. These efforts reflect a collaborative approach within the Xbox ecosystem that seeks to optimize resources and experiences.

The return of Fable, a title that has been away from consoles for a considerable time, adds pressure but also excitement, as fans anticipate not only innovative gameplay but also cinematics that elevate the game to a new visual level. While some rumors suggest that the release of the title could be delayed due to competition with GTA 6, Playground Games has reaffirmed that their Fable is still on track for 2026.

The update for Dragon's Dogma 2 sparks speculation about a major DLC

Dragon’s Dogma 2, the acclaimed RPG from Capcom, has surprised the community with a recent update of 77.75 GB, suggesting the possibility of a significant expansion or DLC.

This size is noteworthy, given that the original game takes up around 70 GB, which implies that the new features could include considerable additional content, similar to what has been seen in other successful expansions in the genre.

New Characters and Regions

The SteamDB changelist has been essential for tracking these changes, as it thoroughly records all updates, expansions, and modifications in the games on the platform. As a prominent user on Reddit has pointed out, the magnitude of this update has sparked speculation about what it could include, with hypotheses ranging from a simple game improvement to new endgame mechanics and new characters.

Among the names most mentioned by the community for possible DLC are Dark Arisen and The Dragon Princess. There has also been talk of the inclusion of the Alchemist and Monk vocations, along with new challenges, such as dungeons, unique bosses, and a revamped loot system that encourages players to explore even more of the world of Gransys. This new content could also include roguelite elements that would offer a more diverse and engaging gameplay experience.

Additionally, rumors about the northern region of Organ have gained strength following recent sightings of griffins in that area, further fueling the community’s expectations. An official image celebrating the game’s anniversary, which featured a mysterious character, along with an in-game letter confirming these sightings, suggests that this could be the setting for future adventures.

The official reveal of this additional content could come at any moment, and the game’s followers will be on the lookout for news from Capcom, although, of course, they will continue to create their own theories.

The developer Rebel Wolves, founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, former director of The Witcher 3, is working on a new RPG titled The Blood of Dawnwalker, set in a 14th century Europe still suffering the aftermath of war and plague.

This title features Coen, a half-vampire protagonist, whose rich and complex narrative is inspired by the successful The Witcher 3. Tomaszkiewicz has expressed his comfort with the comparisons between both projects, stating that he feels “really confident” in his game.

Similarities exist and they are aware of them

Unlike other open-world RPGs, The Blood of Dawnwalker promises significant innovations, such as a day/night cycle that limits Coen’s vampiric abilities to the night, and a time pressure system in side missions, which will force players to make decisions within a set time. This contrasts with the freedom offered in Cyberpunk 2077, where exploration was minimally restricted.

The company, which has 160 employees, seeks to maintain a size that favors good communication and creativity in the development process. Tomaszkiewicz has expressed his desire to avoid Rebel Wolves becoming a company the size of CD Projekt, preferring that the company continues to focus on its identity and creativity in game design.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled to be released this year, and interested parties can already add it to their wishlist on Steam. The studio aims for the success of the game to fund two additional projects of similar size, thus hoping to maintain the focus on the constant evolution of their proposals in the AAA RPG genre.

Every week, the world of digital entertainment is shaken by new updates on games, hardware, cinema, and technology. One of the most prominent controversies of late comes from the acclaimed role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3, which has captured the public’s attention not only for its complex narrative and exciting battles but also for an unexpected scene: a moment of intimacy between a character and a bear.

A very special game

The actor Dave Jones, who plays Halsin, the druid who can transform into a bear, shared his reaction upon discovering this unique scene. During a train ride to one of the recording sessions, he read the script and couldn’t contain his laughter. “It was more the fact that, ‘Oh, oh, we’re going there. We’re going there,'” he commented in an interview with Fall Damage, reflecting the surprise that many players have felt upon learning about this content.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has become a milestone within the RPG genre, managing to stand out for its memorable and emotional moments, as well as for its robust character development. Although the scene with the bear has been a subject of controversy, it is undeniable that it has left a mark on video game culture, setting a precedent for narrative boldness in video games. While eccentricities like this can generate mixed reactions, they also invite reflection on the limits of interactive storytelling.

Meanwhile, expectations for the Divinity reboot are growing, and rumors have emerged about the exploration of equally provocative themes. Undoubtedly, the impact of Baldur’s Gate 3 not only persists but has opened the door to a broader dialogue about creative freedom in the realm of video games.

Disco Elysium is one of the most revolutionary and groundbreaking video games of the last decade. Saying this is nothing strange or new: it has been said since before its release. It is such a special and unique game that it is inevitable that it causes a stir and many people want to imitate it. Even if so far there have hardly been any imitators. Although there is a logical explanation for that: making a video game takes time, now more than ever, and time has to be allowed for the imitators of this great success to arrive.

But they are starting to arrive. With more or less grace, understanding better or worse what made the original game by ZA/UM special, many are inspired by it to create their own RPG. And perhaps the most notable of the first wave of games clearly inspired by Disco Elysium, ironically, has no connection to anyone who worked on it. Its name is Esoteric Ebb and, even more surprisingly, it is the work of a single developer: Christoffer Bodegård.

A game with the essence of Disco Elysium

Esoteric Ebb puts us in a very uncomfortable situation: we are a cleric who wakes up in the morgue after what we are convinced has been our death. We cannot take off our helmet, so we cannot know what our face looks like. And worst of all, we have no exact memories of what has happened.

Fortunately, we soon discovered a few things. To begin with, we might not be a cleric: it is perfectly possible that we are a rogue, a warrior, or a wizard. And that will be decided by what we ourselves choose to be through conversations. Also, our attributes speak to us. Strength, constitution, dexterity, charisma, wisdom, and intelligence will constantly intervene to give us advice and guide us, not always in the most accurate way possible, depending on the numbers we have in each of them. This adds a very interesting twist to Disco Elysium by associating it with the logic of Dungeons & Dragons.

But what is our mission? To discover why and who was behind the explosion of a tea room. And if possible, to find out why we appeared dead in the sea before being rescued by anonymous fishermen. We will have to do all of this within a very specific time limit: five days. Why? Because in five days, the first elections in the history of the city will take place, and such a serious situation cannot be left unresolved before the election results.

Being able to focus on the investigation case or get involved in the political life of the city, being able to support any of the political parties —which represent socialist, liberal, monarchical positions and, justly, also the possibility of being chosen as an all-powerful wizard king—, how much we get involved and to what extent is up to us. If we want to know more about our character, the world, and how they will evolve, it is in our hands, but we can also ignore it and focus on the investigation case. Something for which we will have the assistance of a goblin who will try to help us get through these five overwhelming days.

With a more cartoonish artistic style and less baroque writing than Disco Elysium, but equally brilliant, Esoteric Ebb stands out for knowing how to capture the spirit of the ZA/UM game while creating something unique with it. Creating a game with a strong personality of its own.

With its release scheduled for March 3, 2026, this could be one of the big surprises of the year. One of those games that redefines the path of upcoming RPGs, demonstrating that what Disco Elysium achieved was not a fluke. That it can be repeated. But it requires curiosity and interest and a desire to do something different with the elements that made the original game great. Because Esoteric Ebb, if it proves anything, is that the formula of Disco Elysium is not exhausted.
