The most popular horror and fishing game of recent years is coming to your mobile

Among indie games, very few manage to stand out. Even fewer are easy to predict as potential successes. That doesn’t change the fact that we, from the beginning, made things clear about this game: if a game about fishing in a sea infested with otherworldly beasts while trying to understand the mysteries of sinister coastal towns doesn’t work, then we don’t know how video games work. Among indie games, very few manage to stand out. Even fewer are easy to predict as potential successes. That doesn’t change the fact that we, from the beginning, made things clear about this game: if a game about fishing in a sea infested with otherworldly beasts while trying to unravel the mysteries of sinister coastal towns doesn’t work, then we don’t know how video games work. Fortunately, it seems we do know. Because Dredge was a complete success.

Developed by Black Salt Games, one of the games that was in the running for the best games of the year was Dredge. Selling well, receiving great acclaim from critics and the public, and reaching both PC and consoles, it proved that this peculiar mix of fishing game and Lovecraftian horror worked perfectly.

So much so, that it now takes a step further, reaching mobile devices. iOS and Android users will be able to enjoy this terrifying and tense —yet surprisingly relaxing at times— experience starting from December 18th. Mac computer users will also be able to do so, as they will finally be able to play the game thanks to the fact that, taking advantage of the occasion, it is also being ported to the system.

It is currently possible to register on the App Store page for iOS users, although the Play Store page for Android users does not yet exist. This is something expected to be resolved in the coming hours or days. However, what the game’s page on the App Store does suggest is that it will be a free-to-play game that will probably require a one-time payment to fully experience it.

Pending to see the game in motion, Dredge is a game that, due to its particularities, can be easily translated to the logics of mobile control. That’s why it can be an interesting addition to any mobile game collection and, if you haven’t played it, or even if you have played it and want to replay it, perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to give a chance to one of the best games of 2023.

DREDGE is a first-person fishing game designed for single players. It offers numerous unique environments, as well as many different species of fish to catch while players progress. It has an intriguing backstory, though it lacks an online co-op gameplay mode.

Two of the best indie games of the year are going to have a collaborative crossover

Two of the best indie games of the year are going to have a joint collaboration, adding more Lovecraftnian elements to the nicest of them

If I had received a cent every time an unexpectedly successful fishing-themed video game was released in 2023, I’d have two cents, which isn’t much, but it’s surprising that it happened twice. But the reality is, indeed, two of the big indie games this year share this theme. Focusing on the dangers of the sea, the joys of fishing, and each highlighting very different aspects of both extremes, Dave the Diver and Dredge stand as two of the standout games of the year.

Now, even though it’s true that both games have been successful, they haven’t intersected in any way so far. And it’s important to emphasize “so far.” Because before the year ends, both indies are going to collide to offer a new experience where they will meet in a free DLC.

Named Dave the Diver x Dredge, this free update for Dave the Diver offers us, in the words of Mintrocket, “to explore new depths and discover exclusive content from the fantastic world of Dredge.” Giving us the possibility to encounter the characters and fish some of the fishes—and what necessarily aren’t fishes—from Dredge, this update will bring the sinister Lovecraftian world of Black Salt Games into the friendlier world of Dave the Diver.

This update will arrive before the year ends because it will be released next Friday, December 15, for both the Switch and PC versions of Dive the Driver, completely free of charge.

Whether this crossover will have any kind of counterpart in Dredge is something we don’t know right now. However, Dredge has its first DLC available, The Pale Reach, which invites us to delve into a new icy archipelago where new horrors and environmental challenges await us in an even more dangerous sea than we’ve visited so far. But we wouldn’t turn down the idea if, in the future, a Dredge x Dave the Diver were to arrive as well.

This indie game has sold one million copies in 6 months and is perfect for Halloween

Dredge has been one of the great indie revelations of the year, so much so that this fishing and horror game has already sold a million copies

In such a saturated and complex gaming market, creating an indie game is more than just an adventure; it’s a life or death gamble. Staying afloat and being able to create your next game is already challenging. Achieving success to the extent that you don’t have to worry about money for a long time, it’s like winning the lottery. But occasionally, it happens that a game, aside from being excellent, manages to reach an audience capable of appreciating it. And that’s exactly what happened with Dredge.

Dredge is a horror and fishing game that puts players in the shoes of a sailor who travels to a remote and godforsaken island in search of work. His duties are simple: during the day, he has to go fishing and return before nightfall, as strange things happen in the sea once the sun sets. Soon, the game evolves into a combination of fishing, puzzles, and survival horror, where the peacefulness of the days contrasts with the reality that they are never enough to uncover what is happening on the series of islands where we are working. Players find themselves venturing into an increasingly cruel and merciless night.

Today, the game developers, Black Salt Games, have announced a significant sales milestone. According to producer Nadia Thorne and 3D artist Mike Bastiaens in a conversation with GameDeveloper, the game has sold over a million copies in less than six months. These numbers are staggering for any indie game, but especially for a game that was hoping to sell 100,000 copies in its first year of release. A figure that, according to Thorne, they achieved on the very day of its launch.

Thanks to these spectacular figures, which even big studios would envy, Black Salt can continue supporting Dredge, which will have its first official expansion on November 16th. Called ‘The Pale Reach,’ it will invite us to explore a new, icy sea, where new horrors, secrets, and many friendly fishes to catch will await us with open arms. It seems like a perfect plan for Halloween, allowing us to seamlessly transition from the absolute success that is Dredge to its first and quite chilly expansion.
