Incitement to spend money

This scrutiny is not surprising, given the growing interest of governments in monetization in video games, a topic that became heated after the controversy with Electronic Arts’ Star Wars Battlefront II. In this context, Activision Blizzard’s multiple experiences with monetization systems, from loot boxes in Overwatch to updates in Diablo and Call of Duty, have increased regulatory attention.

The research focuses on how user interface design can encourage players, particularly younger ones, to spend money repeatedly and play for extended periods, creating a vicious cycle. This includes notifications both in and out of the game that promote rewards and attractive offers, although the existence of direct calls to players has not been corroborated, despite being mentioned in the AGCM statement.

In addition, the transparency in presenting the value of virtual currency will be examined and how coin packages can encourage increasingly larger purchases. While Call of Duty Mobile establishes itself as a titan in the market, Warzone Mobile faces its closure after a brief and mediocre stint on mobile platforms.

A single Call of Duty for mobile

Warzone Mobile was officially removed from Google Play and the App Store on May 18, 2024, after Activision acknowledged that the game “did not meet our expectations for mobile players.” Despite having accumulated over 45 million pre-registrations before its launch, the game’s performance was disappointing, generating approximately 17 million dollars since its release, a figure that pales in comparison to the more than 3 billion dollars that CoD Mobile had accumulated by mid-2023.

Call of Duty Mobile, launched in 2019, has been a winning bet for Activision, reaching over one billion downloads by November 2024. This success is largely due to its varied offering of game modes, its frantic pace, and regular updates that have kept an active and engaged player base.

As we already knew, WWE is coming to Call of Duty, and now we know exactly what is coming to Call of Duty Mobile to make us dream of wrestling.

Although when we talk about collaborations in video games we think of Fortnite, the truth is that Call of Duty has been doing an excellent job of integrating other IPs into their games for years.
