Ridley Scott, known for his contributions to science fiction cinema with iconic films like Alien and Blade Runner, is perhaps best remembered for his acclaimed film Gladiator, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2001. This epic drama not only revitalized the peplum genre at a critical moment, but also became a box office phenomenon, grossing over 470 million dollars worldwide.

Gladiator is a movie with a complex production

However, during production, Scott and his team faced a tragic setback with the death of actor Oliver Reed, who played Antonio Próximo. Reed passed away on May 2, 1999, in Malta, victim of a heart attack. Despite his well-known problems with alcohol, which he had promised to control during filming, he died after a night of excess. This mournful event left a mark on the production and the cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, who had a deep appreciation for Reed.

Due to the impossibility of re-recording the remaining scenes of Reed, Scott implemented innovative solutions. Using cutting-edge CGI technology, the team was able to digitally insert Reed’s face onto a double, allowing them to convincingly complete his role. “We managed to finish what was needed of Oliver by stealing digital images of his face and placing them on a suitable body,” Scott explained in an interview.

Despite his death, Reed achieved significant posthumous success, even receiving a BAFTA nomination for his performance. More than two decades later, the release of Gladiator II in 2024 is highly anticipated, featuring a renewed cast, but full of stars, generating high expectations among movie fans.

The acclaimed director Steven Spielberg has expressed his enthusiasm for the Dune trilogy, noting that Denis Villeneuve’s films are among his favorites in the science fiction genre. In statements to Empire magazine, Spielberg particularly praised the second installment of the saga, stating that it is “the best film Denis has made”. His admiration for the film is so intense that he said he can’t wait to see the third part, scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18 of this year.

Fascinated by the second installment of Dune

This exchange of compliments between Spielberg and Villeneuve highlights a professional and personal relationship between both filmmakers. At a DGA event in 2024, Spielberg praised a specific scene from Dune, where Paul Atreides rides a sandworm, describing it as “one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. You made the desert look like liquid.” These words underscore not only Villeneuve’s talent but also the visual impact of his work.

After the conclusion of the Dune trilogy, Villeneuve ventures into new territory, directing a James Bond film, a trademark of action cinema. This will be his return to the action genre after 2015, with the acclaimed Sicario. Although details about this new Bond film remain scarce, there is great anticipation for who will take on the role of 007 in this new installment.

With Dune 3 around the corner, the film community is preparing to bid farewell to the epic story of the Atreides and, at the same time, is wondering how Villeneuve will adapt to a new universe full of action and adventure with the iconic secret agent. This crossroads of Villeneuve promises to be one of the most interesting cinematic events in the coming years.

This film, an unavoidable rite of passage for cinephiles, maintains its impact and relevance in popular culture, standing out not only for its narrative but also for its visual aesthetics.

In space, no one can hear your screams

The plot follows the transport ship Nostromo, which interrupts its course on a mysterious planet under the orders of the Weyland-Yutani corporation’s computer system, which detects a possible alien life form. However, curiosity quickly turns into horror when a crew member is attacked by an unknown creature. This event triggers a series of catastrophic occurrences, reflecting the vulnerability of workers in the face of a corporate system that prioritizes profit over human safety.

Ridley Scott skillfully portrays this space nightmare with masterful visual direction, creating an immersive atmosphere that has influenced the development of the genre and retrofuturistic aesthetics. Every visual element, from the design of the xenomorph to the structure of the ship, is a testament to the meticulous work of Scott and his team, who have elevated the pacing and tension building in the narrative to a level that is difficult to replicate.

Sigourney Weaver’s performance in her starring role adds an additional layer of complexity, making her a benchmark in horror cinema. Alien, the Eighth Passenger is an example of how horror and science fiction can intertwine to create unforgettable experiences, justifying its famous slogan that proclaimed that, in space, no one can hear your screams. Currently, viewers can enjoy this work through La 2’s programming and on streaming platforms like Disney+.

The biggest failure of Disney this year arrives on Disney+

The latest installment of the TRON franchise, titled TRON: Ares, has had a complicated reception, failing to capture the audience’s attention upon its release, which resulted in a significant box office failure. The film, which cost 180 million dollars, is now premiering on Disney+, leading many to wonder if the home experience can salvage its perception.

A movie that has failed at the box office

In the background of the movie, two tech companies compete for the legacy of the iconic character Kevin Flynn. One of them works on using cyberspace to enhance reality, while the other seeks to extract resources from the network to create permanently deployable soldiers. This narrative intertwines with the journey of Ares, a character who begins to question his purpose in a world where technology and ethics collide.

Although Ares features well-executed visual effects and has a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, its visual aspect does not reach the splendor that characterized previous installments of the franchise. The story, which evokes themes from Pinocchio and Frankenstein, feels like a typical Hollywood spectacle, lacking a human element that truly connects with the viewer.

Jared Leto’s performance has been criticized for its lack of charisma, contributing to the film feeling hollow and expendable. In a landscape where science fiction cinema often offers more stimulating visual and narrative experiences, TRON: Ares seems to disappoint by not providing significant value beyond its audiovisual display. If you want to enjoy the film, the combination of visual effects and music may be enough for some; however, many fans of the franchise might find themselves at a crossroads.
