A patch that is going to radically change the game

One of the most notable changes is the recent correction that established a 50/50 split in the Deep Desert between PvP and PvE. This decision has significantly improved the player experience, as they were complaining about being attacked while gathering resources. The new update continues in the same vein, addressing game design and the balance of its mechanics, which is crucial for maintaining community interest.

Among the most notable changes is the improvement in interaction with vehicles, making it easier for players to enter them from different angles. Additionally, an exploit that allowed players to repair all objects to full durability has been fixed, contributing to a more balanced gaming experience. Furthermore, the speed of the Thruster modules of the Ornithopter in Vulture mode has been increased, allowing players a quicker escape in the deep desert.

Other adjustments include reducing the frequency of Harkonnen attacks on certain Atreides bases, as well as updating the anti-gravity fields, which will allow stationary targets to exit them. A problem has also been resolved where Dew Reapers were not continuously harvesting water between dew patches, representing a significant quality of life change.

There isn’t enough room for so many people on Arrakis

Despite the initial skepticism from some fans who were hoping for a more traditional narrative and feared that the survival approach would distort the essence of the saga, Dune: Awakening has offered a rich open-world experience full of possibilities. Players can forge their own adventures in the desert of Arrakis, gathering resources, building bases, and engaging in intense PvP combat, often using vehicles like ornithopters, although improvements in on-foot combat and individual content have been requested.

The user numbers are exceptional. Dune: Awakening has reached 189,333 recurring players and a peak of 69,456 simultaneous players, nearly tripling the record of its predecessor, Conan Exiles, which had a maximum of 58,000. Through missions and objectives assigned by these houses, player guilds can influence the votes, supporting one of the two competing major houses.

Players decide the rules of the game… by force

The result of these votes determines which of the houses, Atreides or Harkonnen, will control the game world for the week. The leaders of the guilds that support the winning faction will be able to vote on decrees that provide significant competitive advantages. For example, reductions of 75% in repair costs and refining times have been mentioned, as well as exclusive access to tools and weaponry for the victorious faction.

Additionally, there is a decree known as The Right of Salvage, which can intensify the tension in the game, as it implies that players who die in PvP will lose all their gear. This type of dynamic will add layers of strategy and risk to PvP interactions in the vast desert of the game.

To prevent one faction from dominating continuously, they have implemented balance systems and plan to introduce a third faction, the Fremen, who will also play a role in maintaining that equity. According to Joel Bylos, the game’s creative director, there are “good systems” to balance power among the factions, which promises a competitive and dynamic experience for players.

Dune: Awakening is scheduled for release on June 10, while players who purchase the Deluxe or Ultimate editions will be able to access an early preview starting June 5.

Villeneuve’s first film was already a success, and this second one only doubles down on everything that made the first one interesting. That’s why it shouldn’t surprise us that new information about other derivative works appears.

The latest is Dune: Spice Wars, an excellent RTS that introduces us to the management and exploration of Arrakis, with a much slower pace, similar to that of 4X games. But let’s not fool ourselves. A large part of the audience dreams more of exploring than managing the endless deserts of Arrakis. Something that Dune: Awakening offers us, an open-world action survival MMO that was announced on August 23, 2022, and of which we haven’t heard anything. Until now.
