Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed filmmaker known for his transparency and frankness, has reaffirmed his straightforward stance on cinema during a recent interview on Bret Easton Ellis’s podcast. In this conversation, Tarantino revealed his list of the 20 favorite films of the 21st century, completing details that had been left pending in a previous installment.

Toy Story is perfect in Tarantino’s eyes

Among his selections, Toy Story 3 stands out, which the director describes as an “almost perfect movie” and the best conclusion to a trilogy. Tarantino spares no praise for the emotional impact that the Pixar film has, emphasizing that “those last five minutes tore my damn heart apart.” The emotion of the ending even leads him to mention that any attempt to describe it could make him cry.

On the other hand, Tarantino also addressed his opinion on Dunkirk, the acclaimed film by Christopher Nolan. Despite acknowledging its mastery in cinema, the director expressed certain initial doubts about the work, highlighting an ambivalent relationship with it. This contrasts with his admiration for Ridley Scott’s direction in a 2001 film, which he considers a “directing feat” despite having seen it only a limited number of times.

Tarantino’s statements reflect not only his love for cinema but also his critical ability. His sincerity in sharing his opinions about other filmmakers and their work is undoubtedly a distinctive trait that has characterized him throughout his career. These assessments help to deepen his unique vision of the seventh art, as well as to generate a more dynamic dialogue around contemporary film appreciation.

Christopher Nolan, known for his mastery in the genres of fantasy, science fiction, and thriller, took a notable turn in his career with the direction of Dunkirk in 2017. This film, based on a true story, details the epic evacuation of over 300,000 British, French, Belgian, and Canadian soldiers during World War II, in May 1940. Starring a stellar cast that includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, and Kenneth Branagh, Dunkirk has established itself as a masterpiece of war cinema.

A movie about a particularly dramatic battle

The film narrates the distressing situation of soldiers surrounded by German forces in the city of Dunkirk and the ingenious deployment of Operation Dynamo, which allowed for their rescue using 861 vessels of all sizes. From yachts to fishing boats, any ship that could cross the English Channel was crucial in this mission, adding a layer of humanity and urgency to the narrative.

Dunkirk not only captivated audiences, grossing $526 million worldwide, but it also became the highest-grossing film about World War II until the release of Oppenheimer in 2023. The latter, also directed by Nolan, has managed to gross $975.8 million, surpassing its predecessor. In terms of prestige, Dunkirk received eight Oscar nominations and won three in technical categories, marking a milestone in Nolan’s career before he finally won the awards for Best Picture and Best Director for Oppenheimer.

As Nolan’s career progresses, his contributions to cinema continue to challenge norms and capture the audience’s attention, establishing him as one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. And now you can enjoy the movie on Amazon Prime Video.

The acclaimed film Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan, has left an indelible mark on contemporary war cinema. Released in 2017, the work is set during World War II and portrays the desperate situation of half a million British soldiers trapped on the beach of Dunkirk, surrounded by the German army. Despite adversity and constant air attacks, the film highlights hope through the feat of civilians crossing the English Channel to try to rescue the troops.

With a unique and bold narrative style, Nolan abandons the traditional focus on a main character, instead opting to offer multiple perspectives of the different operations: the maritime evacuation, the action in the air, and the fight on land. Throughout its 106 minutes, each of these stories unfolds in different time frames, thus providing a rich and complex experience that allows the viewer to empathize with the soldiers’ anguish.

A success among critics, the public, and the film academy

Dunkirk was not only a critical success but also a commercial one, grossing 530 million dollars worldwide and thus becoming a benchmark in war cinema. Acclaimed at the Oscars ceremony, it received 8 nominations and won in 3 categories, including Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, which underscores the importance of Hans Zimmer’s acclaimed soundtrack, further intensifying the film’s atmosphere despite the sparse dialogue.

The film, considered one of the best war movies of all time, is available to stream on platforms like Max and Movistar Plus. With its meticulous attention to detail and powerful sensory narrative, Dunkirk establishes itself as an instant classic that continues to resonate in the collective memory of cinema. And a good way to prepare yourself for what’s next from Nolan.
